Astronomers discover a new class of X-ray sources
Sun and other stars in the Milky Way emit radiation that can be detected by human eyes. Astronomers, however, know many celestial objects that can radiate their energy in the form of X-rays. An international team of scientists, which includes astronomers from the Astronomical Observatory of UW, reported in the “Nature Astronomy” journal the discovery of a new class of X-ray sources.
Best spin-off and largest Polish commercialisation
The Warsaw Genomics spin-off, that aims to develop and deliver highly sensitive and accurate evidence-based genetic tests, and a research team which discovered a universal method for stabilising mRNA molecules were awarded during the ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the University Technology Transfer Centre establishment.
FNP Prize for the UW physicist
Prof. Krzysztof Pachucki from the Faculty of Physics of UW received the Foundation for Polish Science Prize “for precise quantum electrodynamic calculation of spectroscopic parameters of lightweight atoms and molecules.” These findings are the basis for precise determination of fundamental physical constants.
Academic Partnership for Innovation in Teaching and Learning
The International Academic Partnership Programme is an initiative that develop scientific cooperation. Selected universities will form a partnership with other international institutions. UW submitted a project called “Academic Partnership for Innovation in Teaching and Learning” and received funding for its realization. UW will collaborate with the universities which belong to 4EU Alliance.
New discoveries of UW archaeologists in Kuwait
The Kuwaiti-Polish Archaeological Mission headed by Prof. Piotr Bieliński from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology of UW discovered at the Bahra 1 site in Kuwait a structure that may be interpreted as a cultic building from the 6th millennium BC.
Anti-discrimination and anti-violence workshops at UW
In November, students of the University of Warsaw will have an opportunity to take part in workshops during which they will learn how to react to violence and unequal treatment due to origin, nationality or skin colour. They will also find out where to look for support at the university and outside of it. The project is carried out thanks to the participatory budgeting of the University of Warsaw.
Fieldwork for the ERC grant “UMMA” project has begun
The first excavation season of the “UMMA – Urban Metamorphosis of the community of a Medieval African capitality”project has just begun. It is founded by the European Research Council. In 2017, Dr. Artur Obłuski from UW won a ERC grant in order to analyze the transformation process of the city of Dongolafrom an important Christian centre, the capital of the kingdom of Makuria, into a Muslim city.

Three years ago, the University of Warsaw opened its European Centre For Geological Education (ECEG), a unique research and teaching unit. The centre is situated in the closed Korzecko quarry in Chęciny in the Holy Cross Mountains. It is a perfect place for geologists from Poland and all over the world. The centenary of the restoration of Polish independence
In November 1918, Poland regained its independence. Therefore, this year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of our independence. Main festivities will take place on 11th November. On 12th November, the University of Warsaw will be closed due to a national holiday.
The letter of intent between UW and WUM
On 16th October, the University of Warsaw and the Medical University of Warsaw signed a letter of intent on the creation of their federation. Both universities want to carry out joint research projects, run joint courses, and enable their students and employees to use facilities of a partner university. UW and WUM want to formalise their cooperation in October 2019.
LERU and CE7 met at UW
On 22nd September rectors of the universities that belong to the League of European Research Universities (LERU) met with their counterparts of seven Central European Universities (CE7) at the University of Warsaw. They were discussing the future of the EU in terms of Brexit, research funding, regional innovation, open science and internationalisation.
The information meeting for short-term students
Over 700 international students, including participants of Erasmus+ programme, bilateral and governmental agreements as well as the Fulbright programme, gathered in the Auditorium Maximum building in order to get all the essential information regarding studying at the University of Warsaw.
