4EU+ shared courses

Students and doctoral candidates of the University of Warsaw can sign up for courses organised by the 4EU+ Alliance universities in the summer semester of 2023/2024. Registrations for courses offered by Sorbonne University, the University of Milan, and the University of Geneva are open.

Various nematodes

Prof. Agnieszka Kloch from the UW Faculty of Biology contributed to the research on the genomes of nematodes – invertebrates that are parasites found in both animals and plants. The results show that two species of closely related nematodes, which were previously thought to be identical, are separated by millions of years of independent evolution.

A year in review

Medical teaching returned to the University of Warsaw after more than 70 years. The construction work at the site of a new hall of residence in Służew is nearly completed and the University’s strategy for the next decade has been adopted. The last twelve months at the University of Warsaw were the time of various important events, innovative discoveries and awards granted to the members of UW.

Polish language course for international employees

Welcome Point is organising Polish language course for international employees. The classes will be conducted online by the teaching team from Polonicum UW, the Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners.

Success in the QuantERA Call

The project “QM3 – Quantum Multi-Modal Microscopy”, coordinated by Dr Radek Łapkiewcz from the UW’s Faculty of Physics, was selected for funding in the international QuantERA Call 2023.

Quantum complexity

Precise measures of the complexity of states and operators in Quantum Field Theories and applying them in the holographic correspondence and quantum gravity models will be the subject of the research conducted by Prof. Paweł Caputa from the UW’s Faculty of Physics as part of the Consolidator Grant, given by the European Research Council.

Call for proposals for 4EU+ shared courses initiative

Academic teachers of the University of Warsaw can submit their courses conducted in the summer semester of the 2023/2024 academic year as part of the 4EU+ shared courses initiative. Classes will be open to students and doctoral candidates from all member universities of the 4EU+ Alliance.

Tales with a pinch of the Orient

“Tahar ben Jelloun’s tales combine the Eastern tradition of storytelling with the Western richness of Charles Perrault’s fairy tales. The hybridity of the collection corresponds to the hybridised identities of contemporary people in a globalised reality,” Dr Marta Widy-Behiesse, the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, says in the next “Read with the UW” episode.

Erasmus+ scholarship holders in photos

Spain, Ireland, Colombia, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, United Kingdom, Italy. Thanks to the Erasmus+ programme, students from the University of Warsaw take classes or internships in various parts of the world. Thirteen such places have been captured in the first edition of the FotoErasmus+ calendar.

Workshop on stress management

“Exams are coming! How to be(come) effective learner and get rid of unnecessary stress” was a workshop dedicated to international students and doctoral candidates. The event was organised by the Welcome Point of the University of Warsaw.

UW scientist awarded the Fulbright STEM Impact Award

Prof. Piotr Szymczak from the UW Faculty of Physics received the Fulbright STEM Impact Award 2023-2024. This grant will allow him to carry out a project on the process of mineral carbonation, one of the proposed methods for removing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The project will be conducted at the University of Minnesota, USA.

Planetary health survey

Planetary health is among new categories used in research. It helps to describe the current state of the environment and climate in relation to the wellbeing of the population. Scientists from the UW’s ICMCM are also involved in this kind of analyses. MOSAIC – the international project in which they are involved has received funding from the Horizon Europe programme.

UW ranked the best Polish university in sustainability

Quacquarelli Symonds published the results of the university ranking focused on the issue of sustainability. The University of Warsaw was ranked first among Polish universities.

Sustainable information

The application of a model of factors influencing the consumption of the online information content will be the subject of the research to be conducted by Prof. Magdalena Wojcieszak from the UW’s Centre of Excellence in Social Sciences. Her project “Incentivizing Citizen Exposure to Quality News Online: Framework and Tools (NEWSUSE)” has been awarded the ERC Consolidator Grant.

Archaeological discoveries in Georgia

A fragment of a Latin inscription, a relief with the image of Minerva, and a kiln for firing pottery. These Roman-era discoveries were made by researchers from a team led by Prof. Radosław Karasiewicz-Szczypiorski from the Polish Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology, the University of Warsaw, and Prof. Shota Mamuladze from the Gonio-Apsaros Archaeological and Architectural Site.

Monitoring fungal biodiversity

A team of researchers from the UW’s Faculty of Biology, led by Prof. Julia Pawlowska, has been recognised in the BiodivMon competition of the European Biodiversity Partnership Biodiversa+. The UW scientists’ project concerns the monitoring of fungal diversity in the context of nature conservation.

Logical structure of graphs

The relationship between graph theory and logic will be the subject of the research conducted by Prof. Szymon Toruńczyk from the UW’s Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics as part of the project Limits of structural tractability (BUKA). Prof. Toruńczyk was awarded the Consolidator Grant given by the European Research Council.
