2020 at a glance
It has been a calendar year that will long be remembered by everyone. 2020 at the University of Warsaw saw, e.g. different rules for university operations during a COVID-19 pandemic, change of the UW authorities, ground-breaking research projects, national and international successes of UW employees and students. We present selected facts of the last year.
EIT Label Certificate awarded to EIT Food education programmes
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) awarded two EIT Food education programmes: Master in Food Systems and Global Food Venture, with the EIT Label Certificate. The University of Warsaw is involved in both of them.
Second ERC grant awarded to Professor Justyna Olko
The European Research Council has announced the winners of its latest Consolidator Grant competition. Among them is Professor Justyna Olko from the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw who has received funding for implementing the MULTILING-HIST project. The project addresses the complex, multi-level dimensions of historical and contemporary multilingualism.
BUW celebrates its 21st birthday
BUW is the main library of the University of Warsaw. On 15th December 1999, the library was opened to readers in its new premises in Powiśle, at Dobra 56/66 street. In the beginning, BUW granted 42 temporary entrance cards. Today it has more than 100 000 registered users.
UW team among the winners of the first 4EU+ UHCC
A student team representing the University of Warsaw won the second price in the 4EU+ Urban Health Case Challenge. UHCC was organised to address the many urban changes concerning health and demographic transformation in our growing urban environments. Due to the pandemic, the event took place online.
Mission: Christmas Card
Just as every year, the Volunteer Centre of UW organises a special mission before Christmas. The UW community members can get involved and send online Christmas wishes which will be forwarded to ca. 90 seniors, staying in the Nursing Home of the Society of St. Francis de Sales in Warsaw.
Obesity is a risk factor for diseases such as type II diabetes, heart disease and fatty liver disease. An international research team, to which researchers from the UW Faculty of Chemistry belong, identified a new factor that offers a potential new therapeutic strategy for obesity. Their study has now been published in the prestigious journal “Nature Metabolism”.
The COVID-19 pandemic may be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in us. Dr Dorota Kobylińska from the UW Faculty of Psychology will lead workshops for long-term international students entitled “Emotions management in an epidemic and post-epidemic world”. The event will take place on 10th-11th December, in an online format. Application deadline: 26th November.
UW scientist won the 2020 IJCAI Computers and Thought Award
Dr. Piotr Skowron from the UW Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics is the winner of the 2020 IJCAI Computers and Thought Award. The International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) recognised his contributions to computational social choice and the theory of committee elections.
Urban Health Case Challenge 2020
From 23rd-27th November 2020, the 4EU+ University Alliance is hosting the first ever 4EU+ Urban Health Case Challenge. In 2020, the challenge is about community resilience in times of COVID-19 and the external case provider is Gehl. On 27th November, everyone can join the 14 student teams from eight European cities when they present their solutions to the challenge.
