4EU+ Libraries Meeting
The first meeting of the librarians, working in the 4EU+ universities, took place at the University of Warsaw Library. Representatives of libraries shared their experiences with information literacy education for international students, access to e-resources, inter-library loan services, international institutional cooperation within library and information science organizations.
Demand-Driven Acquisition at the University of Warsaw Library
The University of Warsaw Library has launched a new service called Demand-Driven Acquisition. It gives every patron with a valid library card a possibility to decide which e-book would be acquired into the library's collection.
Award for the article co-written by two scientists from UW
Dr. Wojciech Czerwiński and Prof. Sławomir Lasota from the UW Institute of Informatics are co-authors of the paper awarded by the program committee of the ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing conference (STOC). The article entitled "The Reachability Problem of Petri Nets is Not Elementary" has been considered as the best conference paper.
Novel mechanism underlying mitochondrial diseases
Mitochondrial diseases usually manifest themselves in disorders of the nervous system and muscles. Dr. Karthik Mohanraj and Dr. Michał Wasilewski from the UW Centre of New Technologies are members of the scientific team that has discovered a novel mechanism underlying many mitochondrial diseases. The results of their research were published in a magazine entitled ‘EMBO Molecular Medicine’.
UW in the EUA report
The University of Warsaw is one of 9 European universities discussed in the “The Role of Universities in Regional Innovation Ecosystems” report regarding university activities for development of innovation ecosystems. The publication was released by the European University Association. UW is a member of this organization.
54 alliances responded to the “European Universities” call
More than 300 higher education institutions from 31 European countries including all EU member states were involved in the first pilot call under the European Commission’s “European Universities Initiative”. The 4EU+ Alliance, to which the University of Warsaw belongs, is among the 54 alliances that submitted their applications in the Erasmus+ “European Universities” call.
Six universities in 4EU+
„Six partners, three challenges, one vision” that is a motto of 4EU+. The University of Warsaw, Charles University, Heidelberg University, Sorbonne University, that belong to the 4EU Alliance, join forces with the University of Copenhagen and University of Milan. Six partners created the 4EU+ consortium and submitted an application in the Erasmus+ “European Universities” call.
Two new rogue planets
Theories of planet formation predict the existence of free-floating planets that were ejected from their parent planetary systems and are floating alone through space. Astronomers from the Warsaw University Observatory have found two new rogue worlds. The discovery has been published in the journal “Astronomy & Astrophysics”.
Prof. Madeleine Albright visited UW
The meeting with the first woman in history who was in the office of the United States Secretary of State was held on 8th March in the Old Library building. Prof. Madeleine Albright’s visit to the UW was related to the edition of her book entitled ‘’Fascism: A Warning’’. The Polish version of the publication was released last year.
Warsaw ranked 1st in fDi ranking
According to the latest fDi report “Polish Cities of the Future 2019/20 ”, Warsaw reigned supreme for the third time. The capital of Poland performed strongly in the economic potential, human capital and lifestyle, connectivity and business friendliness categories.
Information meeting for short-term students from abroad
How to apply for the UW electronic student card? What is USOS and how to register for courses? Where to go if you need to see a doctor? These and more questions were answered today during the information meeting for incoming students which took place in the Old Library Building. 370 new international students will start their education at UW. The new semester begins on 16th February.
SUNRISE won the Horizon 2020 grant
“Solar energy for a circular economy”, a project of SUNRISE consortium, has been selected as one of the six Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) within the Horizon 2020 programme. It will set the basis for a European large scale research project. UW belongs to the consortium.
