General director of the University of Warsaw Library with the second term

Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, appointed Anna Wołodko for the second term as the general director of the University of Warsaw Library.

Today a book, tomorrow a weapon

Until 7th September, it was possible to see the exhibition “Today a book, tomorrow a weapon” prepared by the Students’ Council of the University of Warsaw. It deals with the issue of Ukrainian students fighting in the war.

Discoveries by UW archaeologists in Albania and Montenegro

A unique building where important political and religious ceremonies might have taken place and a wall system dating back to the Hellenistic period are the discoveries that archaeologists from the Antiquity of Southeastern Europe Research Centre at the University of Warsaw made in the excavation seasons that ended in July. The scientists are conducting research in Albania and Montenegro.

Results of 2023/2024 admissions at the UW

Almost 58,000 registrations, more than 30,000 applicants, including 2,000 from abroad – on 20th July, the admission results were announced for full-time first-cycle and full-time long-cycle programmes, as well as part of other studies at the University of Warsaw in the academic year 2023/2024. The most popular programme as regards the number of applicants per place was medicine.

Two-Faced Star Exposed

An international team of astronomers has announced the discovery of an unusual white dwarf star that is made of hydrogen on one side and helium on the other. They reported their findings in the latest issue of "Nature". Dr Przemysław Mróz from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw is a co-author of the study.

Results of the 4EU+ calls for academic teachers

The results of two calls for academics at member universities of the 4EU+ Alliance were announced on 18th July. The University of Warsaw coordinates three projects selected for funding under SEED4EU+. Four staff members from the UW will visit other universities whereas Prof. Katinka Sewing from Heidelberg University will conduct research at the UW Faculty of History.

The University of Warsaw Choir at Heidelberg University

On 23rd July, the University of Warsaw Choir will perform at a concert at Heidelberg University. The event takes place as part of the cultural cooperation of the 4EU+ Alliance universities.

Platform for Green Dialogue with an award

On 17th July, the award ceremony of the International Green Gown Awards 2023 was held. The project of the University of Warsaw Green Thinking Matter Now!, coordinated by the Platform for Green Dialogue, was granted with the title Highly commended.

Visit of the South Korean delegation

On 13–14 July, the University of Warsaw hosted representatives of the academic and diplomatic world from South Korea. Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, participated in meetings with the President of Chonnam National University, the Korean Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Growth dynamics of mineral dendrites

An international research team involving scientists from the University of Warsaw's Faculty of Physics has described the process of growing three-dimensional manganese dendrites. This knowledge can be used in industry, for example in the production of synthetic materials with new properties. The research results were published in the journal "Geology".

Intensive Polish Language Course for UW students

The University of Warsaw is organising an unpaid 40-hour intensive Polish language course. The class aims to ease the language barrier and prepare international students for living, studying and working in Poland.

Method of Equal Shares for participatory budgeting

How to design algorithms that ensure an equal treatment of implicit groups of voters? This issue has been raised by an ERC Starting Grant recipient, Prof. Piotr Skowron from the UW's Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics and his team in the project “Proportional Algorithms for Democratic Decision”.

UW researchers’ discovery supporting the treatment of breast cancer

Researchers from the University of Warsaw and the University of Ferrara conducted a study which in the future may significantly affect human’s health and improve the processes of treatment and prevention of the disease. The results of the research were published in the journal Non-Coding RNA.

79th Anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising

On 1st August, the academic community of the University of Warsaw will commemorate the 79th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. The gathering will take place at 12pm on the University campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście nearby the main gate.

Visit of the President of Portugal

On 21st August, a lecture by the President of Portugal, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will be held in the Column Hall of the UW Faculty of History. Registration is required.

On rankings and internationalisation at THE Europe Universities Summit

Rankings motivate universities to reach higher positions and achieve better results. As a research university we plan to collaborate with institutions from Europe and the rest of the world. The university should be a place of developing new competences, sharing experiences and opinions,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said during the THE Europe Universities Summit, co-organised by the UW.

4EU+ Alliance welcomes Paris-Panthéon-Assas University as its new member

As of 1st July 2023, the 4EU+ Alliance is joined by the Paris-Panthéon-Assas University, making it the 8th higher education institution on board of the Alliance building One Comprehensive Research-Intensive European University.

UW Rector on Nuclear Industry Human Resource Development

On 6–7th July, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, attended The 1st V4-ROK University Presidents Forum for Nuclear Industry Human Resource Development. The aim of the meeting was to exchange information and strengthen relations between the rectors from the Visegrad Group countries and their Korean counterparts.
