Sorbonne and Geneva universities shared courses

Students and doctoral candidates of the University of Warsaw can take online or hybrid courses organised by the 4EU+ Alliance universities in the winter semester 2023/2024. Registration for Sorbonne and Geneva universities' classes is underway.

UW as a leader of the Perspektywy University Ranking

University of Warsaw has been ranked highest in the Perspektywy University Ranking 2023 in terms of institutions providing the best studies in Poland. Twenty-two majors conducted at the UW have been honoured.

A new signal processing method developed by UW students

Students at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw and researchers from the QOT Centre for Quantum Optical Technologies have developed an innovative method that allows the fractional Fourier Transform of optical pulses to be performed using quantum memory. This unique achievement is first to present an experimental implementation of transformation in this type of a system.

The UW Rector’s Annual Report 2022

On 29th June the Senate of the University of Warsaw adopted “The University of Warsaw Rector’s Annual Report 2022”. The report covers significant data on the UW, e.g. research, education, international cooperation, academic mobility, social and cooperate outreach, finances and investments. The document also includes the calendar of the most important events of the past year.

The discovery of the UW chemists

A research team from the University of Warsaw, Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, National Medicines Institute and Warsaw University of Life Sciences reported studies on a new organic compound with potential applications in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The results were published in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics.

UW in QS World University Rankings 2024

The University of Warsaw has been ranked 262nd in the latest QS World University Rankings, prepared by Quacquarelli Symonds. The 20th edition of the ranking has seen the university rise 22 places year on year. The UW was also ranked 1st among Polish universities.

Applying for a place in a Student House

From 1st June the UW students and doctoral candidates can apply for a place in a Student House for the 2023/2024 academic year.

The similarity of ancient and modern corals

Group of scientists from the University of Warsaw, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the California Academy of Sciences studied fossils of tabulate corals from the Middle Devonian (ca. 385 million years ago). The scientists' observations suggest that these organisms shared remarkably similar adaptations to changing light conditions with modern corals.

On the translator’s work in the “Read with the UW”

"Tłumacz między innymi ('The Translator Among Others') is a book for everyone interested in translation, literature and language. The author describes a translator as an underestimated performer," Anna Wołodko, director of the Warsaw University Library, commented on Jerzy Jarniewicz's book in the next episode of the "Read with the UW" series.

Visit of the Japanese delegation

On 13th June, the University of Warsaw hosted a meeting between its authorities and the representatives of the University of Tsukuba. “Our relations with Japanese universities are very good and the UW students are open to new exchange opportunities,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said, welcoming the guests.

First ERC Proof of Concept Grant in Polish humanities

Prof. Katarzyna Marciniak from the Faculty of „Artes Liberales” UW received the first ERC Proof of Concept Grant in Polish humanities for the project “The Modern Argonauts: A Multicultural Educational Programme Preparing Young People for Contemporary Challenges through an Innovative Use of Classical Mythology”. Prof. Marciniak tells about her research in a video on the UW's YouTube channel.

4EU+ Education Days

On 20–21 June, the 4EU+ Education Days were organised as part of the NAWA-funded “4EU+ for Ukraine” project. The event took place on-site at the University of Warsaw and online.

Long-chain fatty acids and cellular respiration

Cellular respiration is a complex and highly regulated process that allows cells to draw energy from nutrition. An international team of scientists from the University of Oulu, Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies and the University of Warsaw investigated the important role of long-chain fatty acids in guiding this process. The findings were published in Nature Communications.

On future from the European universities’ perspective

The University of Warsaw was a co-organiser of the international conference “Beyond resilience: How European higher education is preparing for the future”, which was held between 3 and 5 July in Warsaw. Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, was discussing collaborative work of European institutions to position Europe as a leading and competitive zone within the global higher education context.

Unique wall paintings discovered in Old Dongola

Old Dongola is an archeological site in Sudan. It is located at the site of Tungul, the capital of Makuria, one of the most prominent medieval African states. The team of researchers led by Prof. Artur Obłuski from the PCMA UW discovered unique wall paintings of saints and King David, one of the last rulers of Christian Makuria. The project is carried out under a European Research Council grant.

Results of the UW Entrepreneur of the Year competition

On 31st May, the award ceremony of the sixth edition of the UW Entrepreneur of the Year Competition was held. The competition committee honoured entrepreneurs who have an innovative approach to business and inspire others in their work.

Laureates of the “Welcome to Poland” programme from the UW

The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange published the results of the next edition of the “Welcome to Poland” programme. Among the winning projects, two were submitted by the University of Warsaw.

40 years of cooperation between the University of Warsaw and Saarland University

June marks the 40th anniversary of the partnership between the UW and Saarland University. On 1st June, the celebrations of the jubilee were held at the University of Warsaw.
