Six universities in 4EU+

„Six partners, three challenges, one vision” that is a motto of 4EU+. The University of Warsaw, Charles University, Heidelberg University, Sorbonne University, that belong to the 4EU Alliance, join forces with the University of Copenhagen and University of Milan. Six partners created the 4EU+ consortium and submitted an application in the Erasmus+ “European Universities” call.

Two new rogue planets

Theories of planet formation predict the existence of free-floating planets that were ejected from their parent planetary systems and are floating alone through space. Astronomers from the Warsaw University Observatory have found two new rogue worlds. The discovery has been published in the journal “Astronomy & Astrophysics”.

SUNRISE won the Horizon 2020 grant

“Solar energy for a circular economy”, a project of SUNRISE consortium, has been selected as one of the six Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) within the Horizon 2020 programme. It will set the basis for a European large scale research project. UW belongs to the consortium.

New labs to open at the PCMA

The PCMA will open two new labs thanks to special funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The Bioarchaeological Lab and Advanced Documentation Methods Lab will enhance the PCMA's interdisciplinary approach to archaeological research.

ENGHUM project as an example of success story

The European Commission published an article on the results of the “Engaged humanities in Europe: Capacity building for participatory research in linguistic-cultural heritage” project. Dr. Justyna Olko from the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” was a project coordinator. According to the European Commission, ENGHUM is an example of success story from EU research.

UW in 2018 – 10 events

In 2018, the University of Warsaw was engaged in various research and didactic initiatives including the UW preparations for implementation the Law on Higher Education and Science (Law 2.0), formation of 4EU – a European University Alliance, and the federation with the Medical University of Warsaw. Fieldwork for the ERC grant “UMMA” project has begun

The first excavation season of the “UMMA – Urban Metamorphosis of the community of a Medieval African capitality”project has just begun. It is founded by the European Research Council. In 2017, Dr. Artur Obłuski from UW won a ERC grant in order to analyze the transformation process of the city of Dongolafrom an important Christian centre, the capital of the kingdom of Makuria, into a Muslim city.

LERU and CE7 met at UW

On 22nd September rectors of the universities that belong to the League of European Research Universities (LERU) met with their counterparts of seven Central European Universities (CE7) at the University of Warsaw. They were discussing the future of the EU in terms of Brexit, research funding, regional innovation, open science and internationalisation.

Using neutrinos and gammas to chase the origin of cosmic rays

The scientists have observed the source for a high-energy cosmic neutrino coming from outside our galaxy. The article in “Science” magazine describes the observational campaign and its results.

4EU Alliance rectors met in Prague

On 29th June, the rectors of the universities, that belong to the 4EU Alliance, gathered in Prague and discuss the key issues related to the collaboration between partner universities.

14 European networks on Horizon Europe

EU released its outline for the 9th Framework Programme for Research and Innovation called Horizon Europe. 14 European associations representing universities united responded to the proposal.

Students interested in pursuing th academic career, doctoral students and post-docs can take an international online survey on the mobility behaviour of international researchers.

UW in New Europe ranking

The University of Warsaw was ranked 6th in the New Europe ranking compiled by the Times Higher Education. The ranking included universities from 13 states that have joined EU since 2004.

European Inventor Award 2018

Three researchers from UW, Prof. Jacek Jemielity, Prof. Edward Darżynkiewicz and Dr. Joanna Kowalska, have been nominated for the European Inventor Award 2018 in the research category.
