Listening to the needs of the community

How does the “HR Excellence in Research” distinction impact the development of University of Warsaw employees? How is the action plan for the coming years being prepared? These are among the topics discussed by the UW Vice Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources and the Chair of the Working Group on the Implementation of the EKN.

Cooperation for the development of doctoral schools

The University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań have signed a cooperation agreement for the development of doctoral schools. The initiative aims to enhance the quality of doctoral education, develop joint projects and build lasting relationships between leading research universities in Poland.

Theatre improvisation for UW employees

The fourth edition of the theatre improvisation course for UW employees has begun. It is organised by Welcome Point UW, the UW Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners Polonicum, and the Impro School. The sessions are led by trainers who regularly perform on Warsaw’s stages.

The food and culture zone is soon to be opened at BUW

Final preparations are underway at the University of Warsaw Library (BUW) for the opening of a new food and culture zone. This is the largest university space where visitors will not only be able to eat, but also organise meetings, networking sessions and cultural events.

Rector’s Day, 4th May

In accordance with the decision of Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, 4th May is Rector’s Day for the entire university.

Restoration of the eagle from the UW’s Main Gate

The eagle from the UW’s Main Gate has undergone necessary conservation work. It will return to its place in a few weeks.

Renewal of Prof. Maria Koczerska’s doctoral degree

On 24th March, a ceremony marking the renewal of Prof. Maria Koczerska’s doctoral degree took place in the Senate Hall of the Casimir Palace on the University of Warsaw campus. Prof. Koczerska is an eminent medievalist and a scholar of the history of the Church and society in medieval Poland.

A tree of remembrance

On 7th May at 12 noon, a symbolic commemoration of Ms Małgorzata Dynak – an employee at our University – will take place on the UW’s Main Campus. The ceremony is open to the public; we invite everyone who wishes to honour her memory in silence and reflection.

An exotic tick species in Poland

Four specimens analysed as part of the National Ticking (Narodowe kleszczobranie) project contain the bacterium Rickettsia aeschlimannii, which belongs to the group of pathogenic microorganisms causing rickettsiosis in humans, a type of spotted fever. The tick research project is being conducted by scientists from the UW’s Faculty of Biology, who are encouraging people to send in specimens.

Cooperation for security

On 31st March, in the Golden Hall of the Casimir Palace, a letter of intent regarding cooperation was signed between the University of Warsaw and the 18th Warsaw Territorial Defence Brigade. The agreement sets out the direction for long-term cooperation, combining the university’s academic potential with the experience of the unit responsible for responding to crisis situations.

31 scholarships from the MNiSW for UW students

The Minister of Science and Higher Education (PL: MNiSW) has awarded scholarships to 402 students for outstanding achievements in academia, the arts or sport. Among the recipients are 31 students representing the University of Warsaw.

The UW in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026

In this year’s Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Warsaw was ranked in 27 disciplines. Among the highest-ranked are Classics and Ancient History as well as Modern Languages.

4th Edition of the Scholarship to Start

Applications for the 4th edition of the “Scholarship to Start” programme at the University of Warsaw are being accepted until 24th April. The scholarship is intended for first-year students and doctoral candidates.

Poland and ASEAN – an opportunity for growth

The potential for cooperation between Poland and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – comprising 11 countries and 700 million citizens – is enormous. The University of Warsaw co-organised the “Poland-ASEAN Dialogue” conference at the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.

“Miasteczko na Styku Kultur – Cultural HotSpot” – call for ideas

Around 4,000 international students and doctoral candidates are studying at the University of Warsaw. Most come from Ukraine, Belarus, China and Turkey, but also from India, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. On 21st May, the University is organising the "Miasteczko na Styku Kultur – Cultural HotSpot" festival for the fifth time. The call for ideas is now open.

Publication in “Nature”

Prof. Bogdan Jaroszewicz of the Białowieża Geobotanical Station at the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, is a co-author of an international study whose findings have been published in the journal “Nature”. The study shows that vegetation in Europe is not keeping pace with the rate of climate warming.

The latest excavation season at ancient Nea Paphos

A stamped vice dating from the 2nd century BC, a fragment of a previously unknown stylobate, around 350 architectural decorative elements and other interesting finds are the result of work carried out by archaeologists from the University of Warsaw conducting excavations in Cyprus. The UW Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaelogy has summarised the findings of a joint expedition by the University

Revitalisation of the cellars at Casimir Palace

Earthworks are currently underway on the west façade of the Casimir Palace, aimed at preparing the building’s 17th-century cellars for renovation and conversion work. In the future, there are plans to create a revitalised space in the building’s basement that will be open to visitors.
