The university shapes the future
“With the community of 70,000 members, the University of Warsaw is an elite institution. The quality of research and teaching remains the major goal of the university. Our students are the elite of the Polish youth, while many UW researches might be future Nobel Prize laureates,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, commenced the official inauguration of the 2022/2023 academic year at the UW.
The opening ceremony of the 2022/2023 academic year
The official inauguration of the 2022/2023 academic year at the University of Warsaw was held on 3rd October, Auditorium Maximum, on the university historical campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście. The opening lecture was delivered by a world-renowned surgeon, Professor Maria Siemionow of the University of Illinois, Chicago. The event was livestreamed.
Research career development and mobility
Apart from international research programmes, international and intersectoral mobility is a key factor in the development of a scientific career, self-improvement and education. As part of the information campaign called “HR Excellence in Research at the UW in June” we are describing university initiatives regarding this issue.
Internationalisation and mobility support actions
The University of Warsaw introduces a number of support initiatives within internationalisation and mobility to help visiting employees, doctoral candidates and students. Here we are presenting the actions under the “HR Excellence in Research at the UW in June” campaign.
The UW awarded the NAWA funding for Ukrainian students and doctoral candidates
The National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) granted the funding of PLN350,000 to the University of Warsaw. The awarded funding is allocated for scholarships for students and doctoral candidates who had to flee Ukraine and decided to stay in Poland.
Open Day at the UW Doctoral Schools
The Open Day at the UW Doctoral Schools will be held on 9th April online. The live-streaming will be available in Polish and English. In addition to presentations of the schools and admission procedures, candidates will have an opportunity to participate in a discussion with speakers during the “PhD - a school of life” webinar.
4EU+ Alliance online courses
In the summer semester 2021/2022, online courses organised by 4EU+ member universities will be available for students and doctoral candidates. The courses are conducted by Charles University in Prague, the University of Milan, and Sorbonne University. The registration is open now.
The best foreign student in Poland
“I was searching for this kind of studies that would facilitate my further work in any part of the world. Now I am an ambassador of my country in Poland and an ambassador of the University of Warsaw in Tanzania,” says Karen Nyakato Kyabega, the best foreign student in Poland.
Life of conodonts
Conodonts were the first vertebrates that used to live in oceans nearly 500 milion years ago. Their teeth are the most often studied fossils. The research by UW doctoral candidate helps to reveal the life cycle and position occupied in the earliest foodwebs by these marine animals.
A New Student Residence Hall at the Sluzewiec Campus
Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, UW Rector, and Mota-Engil Central Europe company representatives signed an agreement for construction and assembly works on a new student residence hall at the Sluzewiec Campus. This is one of the plans under the UW Multiannual Programme. The works are starting this year.
December with VC UW
On the 3rd December the University Volunteer Centre (UVC) will be celebrating the 8th anniversary, and the International Volunteer Day 2 days later as well. To commemorate these events, UVC and volunteers prepare several actions and activities like “Mission: Christmas Card” or a pet food bank called “Filling in Pets’ Bellies”.
IDUB training courses in cooperation with the publisher Springer Nature
UW employees and doctoral candidates can take part in the latest online training courses, as part of the following “Excellence Initiative – Research University” (IDUB) in cooperation with the Springer Nature publishing house. Registrations for the course “Journal Editors” close on 5th November.
4EU+ workshops on Open Science
What is Open Science? What happens with a scientific publication between the time of writing and the formatted paper published in an academic journal? What are the Creative Commons licenses? These aspects of Open Science will be explored during a series of online workshops organised by the universities of the 4EU+ Alliance, including the University of Warsaw. Registration is open now.
