Chimpanzee ground versus tree nests decay

A team of international researchers has conducted a study on the comparison of decay rates of chimpanzees ground and tree nest in the Bugoma Central Forest Reserve in western Uganda. The results are published in the prestigious “American Journal of Primatology”. The main author of the paper is Toni Romani, doctoral candidate at the Faculty of “Artes Liberales”, University of Warsaw.

The similarity of ancient and modern corals

Group of scientists from the University of Warsaw, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the California Academy of Sciences studied fossils of tabulate corals from the Middle Devonian (ca. 385 million years ago). The scientists' observations suggest that these organisms shared remarkably similar adaptations to changing light conditions with modern corals.

Moiré superlattices

“Moiré structures can be formed as a result of interference, i.e. the overlapping of two layers of systems with a specific arrangement of points, lines or more complex systems - e.g. atoms in a crystal - rotated by a certain angle,” Professor Maciej Molas, from the UW’s Faculty of Physics says. The recent findings on moiré structures were published in the Science paper co-authored by Prof. Molas.

Prof. Mikołaj Zapalski from the UW Faculty of Geology with researchers from Japan and Poland described an ecological “living fossil” unseen for 273 million years. Their article appeared in “Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology”.

Counting on fingers – or beyond known oxidation states of chemical elements

Oxidation state usually takes the values from –4 up to +8, and even +9 in one case. Scientists from Centre of New Technologies have done advanced quatum-mechanical calculations and on this ground, they propose several simple molecules, where oxidation state is +9, and even could reach the value of +10.

The article entitled “The Relationship Between Tool Use and Prey Availability in Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) of Northern Democratic Republic of Congo” has been published in “International Journal of Primatology” magazine.
