From classical hydrodynamics to quantum hydrodynamics

Researchers from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw – Maciej Łebek and prof. Miłosz Panfil – have shown that the Navier-Stokes equations used in classical physics can also be applied to quantum systems, specifically in quantum liquids where the motion of particles is restricted to one dimension.

Letter of support for Tomasz, UW security guard

From Monday, 12th May, in the Auditorium Maximum on the UW’s main campus, it will be possible to sign a letter with words of support and wishes for recovery for Tomasz, a university security guard, who on 7th May risked his life to come to the rescue of our Fellow UW Employee. The letter with the signatures will be handed over to Tomasz, who is in hospital.

Bird Nesting in Cities: The More Concrete, the Fewer Chicks

The more urban spaces are covered in concrete, the fewer birds successfully raise their young. A new study led by Prof. Marta Szulkin from the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw not only confirms this link but also provides precise data that policymakers can use. The findings were recently published in Conservation Letters.

4EU+ Alliance courses for students and doctoral candidates

Registration for courses organised by the 4EU+ Alliance universities for the summer semester of the 2024/2025 academic year is open. UW students and doctoral candidates can register for courses at the University of Heidelberg, the University of Milan and Sorbonne University.

New offer from the 4EU+ Alliance

A third MOOC course and a series of training courses for young researchers – the 4EU+ Alliance, of which the University of Warsaw is a member, has prepared a new offer for students, doctoral candidates and employees.

Funeral ceremony for Mrs. Małgorzata

On 19th May, a the farewell ceremony will be held for Mrs. Małgorzata, who tragically lost her life on 7th May on the UW's Main Campus. The funeral Mass will begin at 10.00 a.m. In accordance with the Family's wishes, media representatives are kindly asked not to attend the ceremony.

University Council 2025–2028

At the meeting on 5th March, the UW Senate elected a new composition of the University Council. It will include Prof. Mirosław Ząbek, Robert Dobrzycki, Prof. Roman Kapuscinski and Prof. Marek Karliner. An ex-officio member of the University Council is Mateusz Mossakowski, president of the UW Students’ Union Board.

57th anniversary of the student revolt at the University of Warsaw

March 1968 saw dramatic events at the University of Warsaw – student protests and their brutal pacification by the security apparatus of the Polish People’s Republic. On the 57th anniversary of those tragic days, a ceremony was held at the University’s main campus on Krakowskie Przedmieście to lay flowers under a plaque commemorating the events of March 1968.

Cooperation between the UW and Yerevan State University

On 4th March, a meeting was held at the University of Warsaw between representatives of the university authorities and a delegation from Yerevan State University and the Embassy of Armenia. An agreement on cooperation between the UW and the largest Armenian university was signed.

Improve at IMPROV – theatre improvisation workshops for UW employees

Welcome Point UW is organising the 2nd Edition of Integration Meetings for UW Employees which is devoted to theatre improvisation. The workshops will run until the end of May and are organised in collaboration with the School of Impro and the Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners “Polonicum”.

UW researchers build prototype for European Space Agency

Quantum technologies researched at the University of Warsaw will contribute to the development of a receiver prototype for space missions. The project, led by Michał Parniak, Ph.D., from the Centre for Quantum Optical Technologies at the Centre for New Technologies at CeNT UW and the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw, is commissioned by the European Space Agency.

New issue of the university magazine “UW”

More ERC grants for UW researchers, the commissioning of the new building in the upper courtyard, the international Annual Meeting of the 4EU+ Alliance at the University are events that made University of Warsaw end another year on a high note. We write about them and more in the latest issue of the university magazine “UW”.

UW Open Day 2025

The University of Warsaw Open Day will be held on 12th April on the Main Campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście. It is an excellent opportunity to get to know the university better: the offer of studies, admission rules, activities of student associations, voluntary centre, as well as cultural and sports teams.

EU funds for the UW Botanic Garden

The University of Warsaw has secured more than PLN 510,000 under the European Funds for Mazovia 2021-2027 regional programme for the project “Botanic Garden of Diversity - a project to preserve regional diversity in the heart of a big city”. “The UW’s mission is comprehensive education and research excellence.

Meeting with the delegation of the Slovak Republic

On 12th February, a meeting was held at the University of Warsaw between representatives of university authorities and a delegation from the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic. Discussed topics included the possibilities of developing cooperation in teaching and research.

Study on the commuting habits of the UW community

Until 8th June, students, doctoral candidates, and employees of the University of Warsaw can complete a survey on commuting habits. The survey is part of the university's environmental initiatives. The results will help estimate the university's carbon footprint and support its sustainable development.

Consortium of the Polish Group of Robotic Surgery, Artificial Intelligence and Telemedicine

“By working together and advancing our research, we will be able to do a lot for the development of modern medicine. We will influence what happens in modern medicine in Europe and in the world,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said during the signing of a letter of intent to establish the Polish Consortium of Robotic Surgery, Artificial Intelligence and Telemedicine Group.

Winners of the 13th edition of BraveCamp

Zaklepuje.To is a system and application for managing kayak rentals on the Polish market. Its creator, Jakub Jażdżyk, a student of computer science at the Warsaw University of Technology, became the winner of the 13th edition of the BraveCamp Entrepreneurship Academy, organised by the UW Incubator. The final gala took place on 14th February at the University of Warsaw Library.
