UW Entrepreneur of the Year competition – 6th edition
From 16th January to 3rd April, registrations are open for the 6th edition of the UW Entrepreneur of the Year competition. Entrepreneurs associated with the University, who have achieved a business success, are welcome to participate. The results will be announced in late May.
UW in a project on a European status for European Universities
The University of Warsaw, as the 4EU+ member, takes part in a new EU project on devising a model of a high-level and formalised strategic cooperation for European University alliances. The project will start on 1st March and run for one year.
Fulbright Senior Award for a UW physicist
Dr Maciej Lisicki from the UW Faculty of Physics has been given a Fulbright Senior Award. The decision was made by the Board of the Polish-U.S. Fulbright Commission. As part of the grant, the UW scientist will study fluid transport by so-called active surfaces.
Second ERC grant for Artur Obłuski
The European Research Council has awarded an ERC Consolidator grant to Dr Artur Obłuski's project "Afropolis Tungul: Urban biography of a cosmopolitan African capital". The project will be based at the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, the University of Warsaw.
FOMO 2022. Poles and the fear of missing out
Every third teenager displays a strong fear of missing out (FOMO). This is one of the conclusions from the 4th edition of the research ‘FOMO 2022. Poles and the Fear of Missing Out.’ It was conducted by the researchers from the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies, and the Faculty of Psychology, the University of Warsaw.
UW in a European Degree label project
The University of Warsaw, as a member of the 4EU+ Alliance, is participating in a European Degree label pilot project to promote and implement the European dimension of education and research. The project is aiming at simplifying accreditation processes and joint degrees of higher education institutions in Europe.
Autosave in the PPK in 2023
Starting 1st April 2023, the employer is obliged to contribute to the Employee Capital Plan (PPK). If an employee has previously submitted a declaration to the employer to opt out of PPK contributions, this declaration will expire on 28th February 2023. The earliest that an employee can declare they are no longer making contributions to the PPK is 1st March 2023.
UW auctioning for WOŚP
Olga Tokarczuk’s book dedication, a unique chess set from the Rector, a spring tour in the UW Botanic Garden, dancing classes by the “Warszawianka” Folk Song and Dance Ensemble – these are just several example auctions of the University of Warsaw for the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. Bidding lasted as long as 30th January.
Read with UW – 2nd edition
“Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth” – the series “Read with UW” returns in the second edition with a new episode, produced in cooperation with the University of Warsaw Library. In the series UW employees talk about a book of their choice, which can be found on the shelves of BUW.
Application to establish medical studies at UW submitted
On 10th January Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, duly submitted an application for establishing and commencing long-cycle academic programme in medicine at the University of Warsaw in 2023/2024 academic year to the Ministry of Education and Science.
“Solidarity with Ukraine” under the NAWA funding
The University of Warsaw has been allocated over PLN760,000 from the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange for the cooperation of the 4EU+ Alliance with three partner institutions from Ukraine. The joint project with Ukrainian universities will foster flexible education paths, provide access to the European Education Area and strengthen research and didactic potentials.
Biologists’ Night 2023
Why should you care? Investigating the evolution of parental care in fishes or Biophoto cells and algae: green economy – these are just two examples of the events which took place during this year’s edition of the Biologists' Night organised by the UW Faculty of Biology.
Online course offer for the 4EU+ students
In the spring/summer semester 2022/2023, online courses organised by the University of Milan and the University of Geneva will be available for the 4EU+ students. Other members of the alliance: UW, Charles University and Heidelberg University will soon also present their course offering.
UW spin-off company received funding from the Gates Foundation
Researchers from UW ExploRNA Therapeutics spin-off were granted over $813,000 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to further develop mRNA technology. This unique technology can be used in treating viral infections and cancer.
Discovery of crocodile remains in the ancient Egyptian tombs
The expedition from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archeology discovered nine cloth-wrapped crocodile heads in mortuary complexes in the Theban Necropolis. It is the first of its kind discovery of reptiles’ remains within the tombs of people. The research work is conducted under the Polish Archeological Expedition to North Assasif “Asasif Project”.
