How to make voting-based decisions that better reflect voters' preferences? This question has been raised by an ERC Starting Grant recipient, Prof. Piotr Skowron from the UW Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics in his project “Proportional Algorithms for Democratic Decision”.

Dr. Piotr Skowron from the UW Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics is the winner of the 2020 IJCAI Computers and Thought Award. The International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) recognised his contributions to computational social choice and the theory of committee elections.

Dr. Wojciech Czerwiński and Dr. Michał Pilipczuk from the UW Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics have received prestigious European Research Council grants. Their teams will analyse problems related to infinite state systems and solve difficult research problems using fast computational methods.

Dr. Michał Pilipczuk is a computer scientist at the UW Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics. The European Research Council has awarded him a Starting Grant for his BOBR project. The scientist, together with his team, will try to solve discrete problems in networks using their structural and decomposition properties.

Prof. Dr. Sebastian Faust, Technical University of Darmstadt, and Prof. Dr. Stefan Dziembowski, University of Warsaw, have been chosen to receive the 2020 Copernicus Award from the German Research Foundation and the Foundation for Polish Science for their services to German-Polish research collaboration. Each year more and more foreigners study and work at the University of Warsaw. We would like to present some of them on our website. The first person is Dr. Lucas Pastor, a postdoc at UW.

Over a quarter-century ago, on 17th August 1991, a short yet historically significant email was sent from the University of Warsaw. It was a beginning of the Internet in Poland.

The University of Warsaw Team – Warsaw Eagles – was on the second place and won a gold medal in the ACM ICPC 2017 World Finals in Rapid City in South Dakota.
