UW at #EUInvestInKnowledge campaign
Fifteen European associations of universities have joined efforts to call for an ambitious Horizon Europe budget that would invest in excellent, cross-border research, education and innovation. More than 300 universities, research centres and other organisations signed this call for an ambitious European budget for research, education and innovation. One of them is the University of Warsaw.
SUNRISE and ENERGY-X joint cooperation: a major step towards building a climate neutral EU
Representatives from the EU Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) SUNRISE and ENERGY-X announced their joint cooperation during the 14th European Congress on Catalysis, EuropaCat 2019. The two initiatives will continue to pursue their roadmapping actions until February 2020, when they plan to merge in a new initiative, with a new name.
Meat-eating habits of the chimpanzees of DR Congo: the latest research from Dr. Thurston C. Hicks of the UW Faculty of “Artes Liberales”
In 1989, deep inside the Ituri Forest, Dr John Hart and radio tracker Nobirabo encountered 2 adult male chimpanzees crouched over the carcass of a radio-collared okapi which had just been killed by a leopard. What happened next is described in a chapter of the new book “Chimpanzee Behaviour: Recent Understandings from Captivity and the Forest”.
The Milky Way in three dimensions
When Galileo pointed his first telescope at the Milky Way in the early 17th century, he noticed it consists of countless stars. Since that time, studying the properties and history of our Galaxy has absorbed many generations of scientists. Writing in Science, Polish astronomers from the UW Astronomical Observatory present a unique three-dimensional map of the Milky Way.
Quantum interference in service of information technology
Scientists from the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, in collaboration with the University of Oxford and the NIST agency, have shown that quantum interference enables processing of large sets of data faster and more accurately than with standard methods. Their studies may boost applications of quantum technologies in e.g. artificial intelligence, robotics and medical diagnostics.
SUNRISE’s stakeholders first meeting
The University of Warsaw belongs to SUNRISE, a multidisciplinary consortium which aims at using sunlight to provide a sustainable alternative to the production of fossil-based, energy-intensive fuels and basic chemicals. On 17th-18th June, stakeholders of SUNRISE met in Brussels.
Six universities in 4EU+
„Six partners, three challenges, one vision” that is a motto of 4EU+. The University of Warsaw, Charles University, Heidelberg University, Sorbonne University, that belong to the 4EU Alliance, join forces with the University of Copenhagen and University of Milan. Six partners created the 4EU+ consortium and submitted an application in the Erasmus+ “European Universities” call.
Two new rogue planets
Theories of planet formation predict the existence of free-floating planets that were ejected from their parent planetary systems and are floating alone through space. Astronomers from the Warsaw University Observatory have found two new rogue worlds. The discovery has been published in the journal “Astronomy & Astrophysics”.
SUNRISE won the Horizon 2020 grant
“Solar energy for a circular economy”, a project of SUNRISE consortium, has been selected as one of the six Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) within the Horizon 2020 programme. It will set the basis for a European large scale research project. UW belongs to the consortium.
