10 years of the CNBCh

On 25th March, the event marking the 10th anniversary of the UW Biological and Chemical Research Centre (CNBCh) was organised. The meeting was focused on the previous activities and the future plans of the Centre.

Moiré superlattices

“Moiré structures can be formed as a result of interference, i.e. the overlapping of two layers of systems with a specific arrangement of points, lines or more complex systems - e.g. atoms in a crystal - rotated by a certain angle,” Professor Maciej Molas, from the UW’s Faculty of Physics says. The recent findings on moiré structures were published in the Science paper co-authored by Prof. Molas.

Ground nesting of chimpanzees in Congo

A team of researchers from the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” at the University of Warsaw and the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystems Dynamics at the University of Amsterdam have conducted a study on the ground nesting of chimpanzees in the northern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The results are published in the prestigious journal “Folia Primatologica”.

In front of the Faculty of Medicine

On 17th March the representatives of the University of Warsaw and the Military Institute of Medicine – National Research Institute took part in a series of lectures and scientific meetings titled “Under the sign: Medicine”, which was accompanied by the unveiling of a new plate of the Faculty of Medicine.

New ERC grants for UW researchers

Prof. Piotr Skowron from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, and Dr Agnieszka Brylak from the Faculty of Modern Languages, University of Warsaw received the prestigious Starting Grants of the European Research Council (ERC).

Algorithms for elections

How to make voting-based decisions that better reflect voters' preferences? This question has been raised by an ERC Starting Grant recipient, Prof. Piotr Skowron from the UW Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics in his project “Proportional Algorithms for Democratic Decision”.

Teotl was a key religious concept of the Nahuas. Did it refer to a “god”, a source of energy or a being from the afterlife? Dr Agnieszka Brylak from the UW Faculty of Modern Languages will try to find the answer to this question during the project “The concept of teotl: a complex approach to the principal religious category of pre-Hispanic Central Mexico”, financed with the ERC Starting Grant.

Fulbright Senior Award for a UW physicist

Dr Maciej Lisicki from the UW Faculty of Physics has been given a Fulbright Senior Award. The decision was made by the Board of the Polish-U.S. Fulbright Commission. As part of the grant, the UW scientist will study fluid transport by so-called active surfaces.

FOMO 2022. Poles and the fear of missing out

Every third teenager displays a strong fear of missing out (FOMO). This is one of the conclusions from the 4th edition of the research ‘FOMO 2022. Poles and the Fear of Missing Out.’ It was conducted by the researchers from the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies, and the Faculty of Psychology, the University of Warsaw.

The new method of preparing RNA for sequencing

Dr Maria Górna from the Faculty of Chemistry and her team developed a new method of preparing RNA for sequencing, which will facilitate the study of gene expression for many species of fungi, plants and eukaryotic microorganisms.

On bryozoans in “Scientific Reports”

Prof. Mikołaj Zapalski from the Faculty of Geology, with colleagues from Estonia, Germany and USA, investigated and described an interesting material of bryozoans from the latest Silurian (about 420 mln years ago) of Estonia. The findings indicate that the studied organisms, either in symbiosis, or alone, are able to form other mechanisms to adapt to the surroundings.

University of Geneva in the 4EU+ Alliance

Starting 1st August, the 4EU+ Alliance will be joined by the University of Geneva (UNIGE). The integration has been duly approved by the Governing Board of the European University Alliance.

The first “dormant” black hole outside our Galaxy

An international group of astronomers with the participation of scientists from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw discovered a “dormant” stellar-mass black hole in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighbor galaxy to our own. It is the first object of this type found outside the Milky Way.

Prof. Artur Obłuski wins the ERC Public’s Choice Award

Prof. Artur Obłuski, director of the UW Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology and leading researcher of the ERC Starting Grant UMMA, has received the Public’s Choice Award under the European Research Council’s Public Engagement with Research competition.

Internationalisation and mobility support actions

The University of Warsaw introduces a number of support initiatives within internationalisation and mobility to help visiting employees, doctoral candidates and students. Here we are presenting the actions under the “HR Excellence in Research at the UW in June” campaign.

A symbol of trust

The University of Warsaw has entered the renewal procedure of the HR Excellence in Research award. Prof. Sambor Grucza, Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources, is discussing the consequent changes that the distinction triggers and their influence on the university.

The UW mini-grants under the 4EU+ Alliance

The University of Warsaw has launched the third edition of the mini-grants programme for inter-institutional research teams under the framework of strategic partnerships. The programme can be joined by researchers including University staff members and/or doctoral candidates and students, and representatives of at least two other member universities of the 4EU+ Alliance.

Study Visits Programme for Ukrainian students and doctoral candidates at the University of Warsaw

The initiative called The Study Visits Programme for Ukrainian Students and Doctoral Candidates at the University of Warsaw aims at facilitating the students and doctoral candidates from Ukrainian universities to conduct research at the University of Warsaw. The programme was launched 27th April.
