Physicists from the UW in “Nature Photonics”

Researchers at the UW's Faculty of Physics have developed a new, highly efficient technique that makes quantum information transmission dozens of times faster. The results of the research, published in the prestigious journal "Nature Photonics", may in the near future contribute to the development of superfast quantum Internet connections.

Students from the UW win the International Physicists’ Tournament 2023

A team of students from the UW Faculty of Physics took 1st place in the International Physicists’ Tournament. The competition was held from 23rd to 29th April in Palaiseau, France.

University of Warsaw as a member of the ACTRIS-ERIC

The European Commission has taken a decision to establish the ACTRIS-ERIC consortium. Its aim is to concretise a long-term effort by several European countries to create a sustainable infrastructure supporting atmospheric and climate research. Poland is one of the 17 founding members of the consortium. The UW is represented in this group by Prof. Iwona Stachlewska from the Institute of Geophysics.

Defying gravity

Physicists from the Utrecht University and the UW Faculty of Physics have observed - for the first time experimentally - the Brazil nut effect in a mixture of charged colloidal particles. The findings were published in “The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” (PNAS).

Moiré superlattices

“Moiré structures can be formed as a result of interference, i.e. the overlapping of two layers of systems with a specific arrangement of points, lines or more complex systems - e.g. atoms in a crystal - rotated by a certain angle,” Professor Maciej Molas, from the UW’s Faculty of Physics says. The recent findings on moiré structures were published in the Science paper co-authored by Prof. Molas.

Winners of the University Physics Competition 2022

Students of the UW Faculty of Physics ranked as Gold Medal Winners in the University Physics Competition 2022. The contest was attended by 417 teams from research centres all over the world, including 11 teams from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw. Among the UW students are also winners of 5 silver and 2 brown medals.

Fulbright Senior Award for a UW physicist

Dr Maciej Lisicki from the UW Faculty of Physics has been given a Fulbright Senior Award. The decision was made by the Board of the Polish-U.S. Fulbright Commission. As part of the grant, the UW scientist will study fluid transport by so-called active surfaces.

An isolated black hole roaming our Milky Way galaxy

The Milky Way galaxy is expected to host over 100 million isolated black holes. Two independent teams of scientists, including astronomers from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw, have for the first time discovered what may be a free-floating black hole.

Eyeglasses for the Ukrainians

Eyesight examinations by students of optometrics, the UW Faculty of Physics, are available free of charge for the citizens of Ukraine who had to flee the war zone in their country. During the fortnight, over thirty patients received free consultation.

UW Physicists in ”Nature”

Scientists from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw led by Prof. Michał Tomza, together with the experimental group of Prof. Tobias Schaetz from the University of Freiburg, were the first to observe Feshbach resonances between single ion and ultracold atoms. The results of their work have been published in “Nature”. The article has also been highlighted on the journal’s cover.

Researchers from the UW Faculty of Physics, University of Cambridge, Queen Mary University of London and University of Sofia have shown that slow cooling of a suspension of oil droplets with surfactant in water may lead to non-spherical shapes of the droplets, which can produce filamentous structures resembling bacterial flagella. RI-URBANS among the European Green Deal projects

RI-URBANS project, in which UW scientists are involved, received funding in the European Commission's call “European Research Infrastructures capacities and services to address European Green Deal challenges (LC-GD-9-1-2020)”.

Scientists from UW published their article in “Nature Chemical Biology”

Prof. Jacek Jemielity, Dr. Joanna Kowalska and Dr. Anaïs Depaix from UW, in collaboration with scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, demonstrated how enzyme activity in intracellular condensates contributes to mRNA degradation. The findings will enable further development of mRNA-based therapies.

Article in “Nature” bringing new insights into the mechanism of nuclear fission

When an over-inflated balloon bursts, its pieces fly away in opposite directions performing various air evolution. The process of nuclear fission, in which a nucleus is split into two parts accompanied by the emission of several neutrons, proceeds similarly. UW scientists have contributed to the research presented in the newly-published article in “Nature”.

10 thousand face shields for medical staff who combat coronavirus

Volunteers from the Faculty of Physics produced 10 thousand face shields 3D printed over 2 months and donated them to 200 medical institutions from all over Poland.
