Researchers from the Faculty of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw took part in an international project to determine the intensity and causes of human migration within the Roman Empire and its immediate vicinity. The results of the DNA research shedding new light on the history of European population in the first millennium AD were published in the “eLife” journal.

Prof. Freiherr Claus von Carnap-Bornheim, a researcher of the Roman period, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Warsaw. The ceremony to confer the title took place on 5th December at Kazimierzowski Palace.

Germanic coinage dates back 200 years earlier than it was commonly believed. The international team, including researchers from the University of Warsaw, discovered coins produced by Germanic societies in the late 3rd century. Recent studies conducted by researchers from the Faculty of Archeology at the University of Warsaw contributed to a discovery of particular importance. On the famous figural mosaic, a huge hydraulic wheel was discerned. According to Prof. Marek T. Olszewski, it is currently known as the oldest representation of a noria.

After years of research conducted by Prof. Marek T. Olszewski from the UW Faculty of Archaeology, the iconographic program of the famous mosaic from the reception room of the Roman House of Aion in Paphos (Cyprus) has been resolved. The interpretation of the Polish researcher was accepted by scholars of Roman iconography as adequate and precise.
