“Mitochondria are essential organelles that provide cellular metabolic power through oxidative phosphorylation necessary for the organism to function and reproduce. Dr. Piotr Szwedziak from the UW Centre of New Technologies is one of nine young scientists who received an EMBO Installation Grant. The Installation Grant is awarded to early-career researchers establishing their independent laboratories. Dr. Szwedziak carries out research on cellular architecture of Archaea and their evolution.

Dr Anna Karnkowska from the UW Faculty of Biology and Biological and Chemical Centre received a grant from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). The Installation Grant is awarded to early-career researchers establishing their independent laboratories. Dr. Karnkowska’s research interests include diversity and molecular evolution of chosen groups of protists.

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) elected 28 new young investigators from 11 countries. Assistant Professor Joanna Sułkowska from the Centre of New Technologies is among them.
