210 Years of the University of Warsaw

On 19th November, the University of Warsaw will celebrate the 210th anniversary of its founding. This milestone offers an opportunity not only to reflect on the university’s history, but also to highlight the most significant achievements of its academic community. To mark the occasion, the university has organised special exhibitions and performances.

The university community

“The finest quality of the University of Warsaw is mutual respect. We are characterised by tolerance, openness and the pursuit of truth. Today, you are becoming students and doctoral candidates at the best university in Poland,” said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector. On 1st October, the opening of the 2026/2027 academic year took place.

Two ERC Starting Grants at the UW

Dr Agnieszka Radziwinowiczówna and Prof. Michał Parniak have been awarded prestigious Starting Grants from the European Research Council (ERC). The projects, which they will carry out at the UW, concern the return of deportees to countries deemed unsafe and the quantum detection of electromagnetic waves in the microwave and millimetre-wave ranges using excited Rybdergov atoms.

Lecture by a Qatari Diplomat at the UW

“Qatar’s Diplomacy: The Art of Peaceful Dispute Resolution” is the title of the lecture delivered by Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar. The event took place on 13th October in the Senate Hall of the University of Warsaw.

Vote for the calendar cover photo in the FotoErasmus+ 2026 competition

Voting is now open to choose the photograph that will feature on the cover of the University of Warsaw International Relations Office's 2027 calendar. The jury has shortlisted three photographs submitted to the fourth edition of the FotoErasmus+ competition. Voting closes on 21st October.

An exhibition marking 210 years of the UW’s development

The University of Warsaw will celebrate its 210th anniversary this year. To mark this milestone, the university has organised numerous events highlighting the academic community’s most significant achievements and successes. The first of these is an exhibition at the Kazimierzowski Palace entitled “The University of Warsaw: 210 Years of Development”. The opening took place on 1st October.

Chromium leaching from leather products

A team led by Prof. Beata Krasnodębska-Ostręga from the UW’s Faculty, in collaboration with the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute for Sustainable Technology, has developed innovative analytical procedures to study chromium leaching from leather products. Their findings were published in the prestigious “Journal of Hazardous Materials”.

Working together to keep our University safe

The safety of the academic community is a priority for the University of Warsaw. The University takes measures to prevent potential threats, while mutual awareness and a shared sense of responsibility also play an important role in creating a safe environment to study and work.

Preventing Undesirable Behavior at the University of Warsaw

The University of Warsaw implements measures to counteract sexual harassment, discrimination, mobbing, and other forms of undesirable behavior. These measures include support for individuals affected by such behavior, procedures for reviewing complaints, training, and educational materials.

Meeting at the UW with a delegation from an Argentine university

A meeting was held at the University of Warsaw with representatives of the Universidad Gastón Dachary (UGD) – a university in Argentina. Discussions focused on opportunities for developing academic, research and institutional cooperation between the UW and UGD.

“Nuclear Physics News” on the 30th anniversary of the HIL UW

An article published in the international journal “Nuclear Physics News” summarises more than three decades of development at the UW’s Heavy Ion Laboratory. The authors present the centre’s most significant achievements, the development of the Warsaw cyclotron and research equipment, as well as the centre’s activities in the fields of, e.g. nuclear physics, radiobiology and nuclear medicine,

Support for international members of the UW community

The Welcome Point Pavilion is open on the Main Campus, where international students, doctoral candidates, and employees can receive practical advice on academic life. In October, Welcome Point offers events for international UW students.

Interview with the UW Rector for a leading Japanese daily newspaper

During his visit to Japan in September, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, gave an interview to the leading financial and economic newspaper “Nihon Keizai Shimbun”. In the interview, he discussed, amongst other subjects, the use of artificial intelligence in science.

The role of universities in the Weimar Triangle

What role do European university alliances play in strengthening excellence, innovation and sovereignty? This was the topic of discussion among participants at the two-day conference entitled "Shaping Europe: The Role of Universities in the Weimar Triangle Trilateral Conference on European University Alliances", which took place on 24th–25th September at the University of Warsaw.
