Free-floating planets – lonely wanderers in the Milky Way

It could be called the discovery of the decade. The existence of a new class of exoplanets – free-floating planets – was demonstrated by an international team of astronomers, in which scientists from the large-scale OGLE sky survey conducted at the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw and the Gaia Science Alerts project of the Gaia satellite played a key role.

2025 at the University of Warsaw

It was a year of significant achievements, important meetings and agreements, but also difficult experiences. Here is a recap of the most important events of the last 12 months at the University of Warsaw.

On 19th December, the astronaut’s final meeting took place as part of the scientific and technological tour “IGNIS".

Admission for the summer semester

Admission for second-cycle studies beginning in the summer semester of the 2025/2026 academic year is now open. Those interested in the University of Warsaw's offer can enrol in selected programmes via the Internet Recruitment of Candidates (IRK). Registration ends between 23rd January and 13th February.

UW Support Chat

Blue Monday — often referred to as the most depressing day of the year — falls at a time when many people struggle with fatigue, low mood, and a sense of being overwhelmed. This safe, free, and anonymous form of psychological support is available to the entire academic commu

Partial Studies with an Erasmus+ Scholarship

Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States. Students and doctoral candidates of the University of Warsaw have the opportunity to undertake partial studies in these countries with an Erasmus+ scholarship. The application deadline is 19th January.

4EU+ shared courses initiative: Call for proposals

UW academic teachers can once again submit courses that are fully delivered (including assessment) in an online or hybrid mode to be made available to students and doctoral candidates from 4EU+ Alliance member universities. The courses will be made available as part of the 4EU+ shared courses initiative. Proposals must be submitted by 28th January.

4EU+ courses for students and doctoral candidates

Partner universities from the 4EU+ Alliance have reopened registration for their courses for students and doctoral students. There are classes available at the Universities of Geneva, Charles in Prague, Paris-Panthéon-Assas, Sorbonne and Milan.

Nobel laureate at the University of Warsaw

Prof. Ben L. Feringa spoke about his first molecule, nanomaterials, smart drugs, as well as about how important it is in life to ask questions and how The Simpsons predicted the Nobel Prize. On 9th January, the eminent chemist from the University of Groningen gave a lecture at the UW on the art of creating small things.

The UW Rector at Peking University

From 12th to 14th December, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, participated in the international conference The 11th International Workshop on New Structural Economics and accompanying academic events devoted to contemporary economic, political and military turbulence and to the role of the state in the economy. The visit took place at the invitation of Peking Universit

Visit of the UW Rector to Beijing Union University

The Rector of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, met with the rectorial team of Beijing Union University. The discussions focused on the prospects for establishing and developing institutional cooperation.

Cooperation agreement with Wuhan University

The University of Warsaw has signed a cooperation agreement with Wuhan University – one of the oldest and highest-ranking research institutions in China. During a meeting held on 5th December at the Kazimierzowski Palace, both parties concluded a Memorandum of Understanding and a Student Exchange Agreement.

A great diversity of nanostructures

Dr Nevill Gonzalez Szwacki from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw has developed a groundbreaking model that explains the diversity of boron nanostructures - from hollow molecular clusters to ultrathin 2D layers.

University of Warsaw researchers trace the footsteps of the first Muslims in Africa

Researchers from the University of Warsaw have launched a new interdisciplinary research project devoted to one of the most important sites in the early history of Islam in Ethiopia. The initiative combines ethnographic and archaeological research, aiming to provide a comprehensive perspective on the material heritage and local narratives associated with the First Hijra.

Research Impact Leaders Award 2025 for the University of Warsaw

Elsevier publishing company has announced the winners of the Research Impact Leaders Award 2025. The distinction is granted to universities whose research makes the greatest contribution to the international perception of Polish science. The University of Warsaw won in the category of Natural Sciences.
