210 Years of the University of Warsaw

On 19th November, the University of Warsaw will celebrate the 210th anniversary of its founding. This milestone offers an opportunity not only to reflect on the university’s history, but also to highlight the most significant achievements of its academic community. To mark the occasion, the university has organised special exhibitions and performances.

The university community

“The finest quality of the University of Warsaw is mutual respect. We are characterised by tolerance, openness and the pursuit of truth. Today, you are becoming students and doctoral candidates at the best university in Poland,” said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector. On 1st October, the opening of the 2026/2027 academic year took place.

Two ERC Starting Grants at the UW

Dr Agnieszka Radziwinowiczówna and Prof. Michał Parniak have been awarded prestigious Starting Grants from the European Research Council (ERC). The projects, which they will carry out at the UW, concern the return of deportees to countries deemed unsafe and the quantum detection of electromagnetic waves in the microwave and millimetre-wave ranges using excited Rybdergov atoms.

Olga Tokarczuk at the University of Warsaw

On 29th October, the University of Warsaw hosted a meeting with Olga Tokarczuk, Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, UW alumna and honorary doctorate holder of the University of Warsaw. The event, devoted to the writer's latest novel, Świata jest za dużo, was opened by Prof. Adam Niewiadomski, Vice-Rector for Doctoral and Legal Affairs at the UW.

Responsibility in Public Communication

Academic freedom, freedom of expression and the right to criticism are fundamental values of the UW. These freedoms, however, carry responsibilities: to express opinions responsibly, present information accurately, respect the dignity of others and safeguard the University's credibility. Responsibility for one's words is among the principles set out in the newly adopted UW Code of Ethics.

Prof. Sebastian Skuza receives honorary doctorate from AGH University of Krakow

Prof. Sebastian Skuza from the Faculty of Management at the University of Warsaw has received an honorary doctorate from AGH University of Krakow. The distinction recognises his research and teaching achievements, as well as his contribution to the development of the Polish science and higher education system, public finance and financial market institutions.

An exhibition marking 210 years of the UW’s development

The University of Warsaw will celebrate its 210th anniversary this year. To mark this milestone, the university has organised numerous events highlighting the academic community’s most significant achievements and successes. The first of these is an exhibition at the Kazimierzowski Palace entitled “The University of Warsaw: 210 Years of Development”. The opening took place on 1st October.

4EU+ Annual Meeting in Paris

From 28th to 30th October, the 4EU+ Annual Meeting of the is taking place at Paris-Panthéon-Assas University. The event gathers representatives of the Alliance’s eight member universities, including the University of Warsaw. On 30th October, the General Assembly will be streamed online. The session will include the official handover of the 4EU+ Presidency to Paris-Panthéon-Assas University.

UNICENTRO representatives visit the University of Warsaw

On 19th October, representatives of the Brazilian Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste (UNICENTRO) visited the University of Warsaw. The discussions focused on strengthening inter-university cooperation. The meeting followed a visit to Brazil earlier this year by a UW delegation led by Rector Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak.

Meeting with a Chinese delegation

Prof. Sambor Grucza, the UW Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources, and representatives of the University of Warsaw’s Faculty of Asian and African Cultures met with a delegation from the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), an institution affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. The discussions focused on potential areas of cooperation,

4EU+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) Call 2026

Researchers and academic teachers of the University of Warsaw can now submit their educational projects in the 4EU+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) call. The call is open until 30th November.

Development of cooperation between the University of Warsaw and UCSM

From 3rd to 6th October, a delegation from the University of Warsaw, led by the Rector, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, paid a visit to the Universidad Católica de Santa María (UCSM) in Arequipa. This marks the next stage in the development of cooperation between the UW and one of the most important universities in southern Peru.

Lecture by a Qatari Diplomat at the UW

“Qatar’s Diplomacy: The Art of Peaceful Dispute Resolution” is the title of the lecture delivered by Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar. The event took place on 13th October in the Senate Hall of the University of Warsaw.

Vote for the calendar cover photo in the FotoErasmus+ 2026 competition

Voting is now open to choose the photograph that will feature on the cover of the University of Warsaw International Relations Office's 2027 calendar. The jury has shortlisted three photographs submitted to the fourth edition of the FotoErasmus+ competition. Voting closes on 21st October.

Chromium leaching from leather products

A team led by Prof. Beata Krasnodębska-Ostręga from the UW’s Faculty, in collaboration with the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute for Sustainable Technology, has developed innovative analytical procedures to study chromium leaching from leather products. Their findings were published in the prestigious “Journal of Hazardous Materials”.
