Student associations, national and international competitions, research projects, grant programmes and scholarships. All these possibilities await current and future students of the University of Warsaw.
Student associations
Almost two hundred and thirty research and artistic associations are active at the UW. Twenty-one new student associations were registered this academic year, and five were reactivated.
The oldest organisations of this type include:
- Studenckie Koło Naukowe Historyków at the UW Faculty of History (registered in 1986),
- Koło Naukowe Studentów Geografii at the UW Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies (registered in 1986),
- Koło Naukowe Studentów Archeologii “Puerta del Sol” at the UW Faculty of Archaeology (registered in 1994).
The students who participate in the associations organise – either independently or in collaboration with their academic supervisors – scientific conferences, workshops and training courses, as well as meetings with people of culture, art, science and politics. Student associations provide opportunities for their members to publish and carry out research projects together with scientists.
A full list of research and artistic associations is available in Polish at www.rada.uw.edu.pl.
Cultural and sports organisations
UW students can also develop their passions through membership in cultural organisations, i.e. the University of Warsaw Academic Choir, the University of Warsaw Chamber Choir “Collegium Musicum”, the University of Warsaw Dance Theatre “Warszawianka”, or Hybrydy Theatre.
The students can develop their sporting skills in various sections of the UW’s Academic Sports Association (PL: Akademicki Związek Sportowy; AZS), such as: team sports sections (futsal, basketball, handball, football, and volleyball), water sports (swimming, rowing and sailing), winter sports (skiing, snowboarding), martial arts (aikido, karate, krav maga), athletics, aerobics, badminton, cross-country running, rowing ergometer, horse riding, mountain biking, dance, tennis and table tennis, power triathlon, climbing, as well as bridge and chess.
Detailed information about the sports sections of the AZS is available at www.en.uw.edu.pl.
Students’ Union of the UW
Representatives of UW students form the Board of the Students’ Union that stands for student affairs before the University authorities. As members of the UW Senate, they influence the functioning of the University by attending its meetings. Together with the Vice-Rector for Students and Quality of Teaching, they set the rates of social grants or prices in halls of residence. They allocate funds to run student associations. Every year they also prepare cultural events such as the jUWenalia (the Students’ Festival was held this year on 10th and 11th May, more information available here: https://en.uw.edu.pl/juwenalia-2024).
Student media
Students who wish to develop a passion for journalism might undertake voluntary cooperation with the University-wide administration units: Academic Radio Kampus, and the Student Internet Television Uniwerek.TV. Supervised by experienced journalists and reporters, students cover topics related to the University of Warsaw and student life. They also often report on non-University events touching on social, political and cultural issues.
Achievements of UW students
The University of Warsaw is a space where talented students can develop with the support of their academic supervisors. Our students are successful in national and international competitions.
This year, the accomplishments have been achieved by:
- Students from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics who won a bronze medal at the finals of the 47th International Collegiate Programming Contest in Luxor, Egypt.
- Three UW students who stood on the podium at the final gala of the 11th edition of the BraveCamp Entrepreneurship Academy organised by the UW Incubator.
- A team from the Faculty of Physics won the Polish Physicists’ Tournament (PL: Polski Turniej Fizyków) and qualified for the world competition in the International Physicists’ Tournament. The UW was represented by six students who had to solve tasks requiring, for example, conducting experiments and testing theories.
Scholarships
Students with special achievements can apply for scholarships and grants.
In the ongoing academic year, the Scholarships to Start (for Olympians, athletes, and doctoral candidates) were also presented for the second time, and forty-nine students received scholarships awarded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for significant scientific, artistic or sporting achievements. Students can also apply for the Rector’s scholarship. More information is available at www.bpm.uw.edu.pl/en.
