On 24th June, the UW Senate adopted the “Rector’s Annual Report on the University of Warsaw’s Activities in 2025”. The document contains information on the various groups within the academic community, research and teaching activities, student asmissions, international cooperation and academic exchange, relations with the socio-economic environment, investments carried out at the university, and the state of its finances.
Adopted during the last Senate meeting before the summer recess, the report is the sixth document of its kind during the terms of office of Rector Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak.
“The year 2025 was a time of intense work, further development and many important achievements for the University of Warsaw community, but it was also an extremely difficult and painful experience. The events of 7th May 2025, when our colleague, Ms Małgorzata Dynak, was killed on the University of Warsaw’s Main Campus, will remain forever etched in the memory of the entire academic community. (…) One of the university’s top priorities in 2025 was to strengthen a modern and comprehensive security system. We established the Office for Security Affairs, developed crisis response procedures, enhanced the capabilities of the university security service, and strengthened our cooperation with institutions responsible for public safety. We have also devoted particular attention to psychological support and initiatives promoting the mental well-being of members of our academic community (…). The past year has shown just how important mutual support, trust, and a sense of responsibility for one another are. I would like to thank you all for your daily work, commitment, and care for our Alma Mater. I believe that, through our joint efforts, we will continue to develop the University of Warsaw as a modern, strong, and open institution,” writes Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, in the introduction to the document.
The report presents key figures and statistics relating to students, doctoral candidates, postgraduate students, graduates, and employees at the University of Warsaw. It outlines the admissions process and results, the range of courses on offer, and the forms of financial and psychological support available. The document also provides information on university-wide development programmes and details the IT and digital projects currently being implemented by the university.
The document also describes the research achievements of UW researchers, as well as the University’s strategic initiatives, including the “Initiative of Excellence – Research University” programme and the 4EU+ Alliance. It also contains information on library collections and details of activities aimed at internationalisation and cooperation with the business sector.
The report presents the university’s financial position (income, costs, expenditure and implementation of the financial plan) as well as its property portfolio, including ongoing investments and plans under the Multi-Annual Programme.
The document also includes a timeline of the most important events of 2025, a year marked by significant achievements but also by difficult experiences. The University of Warsaw’s priority in 2025 was the safety of the academic community. The university introduced numerous measures in this regard, stepping up its efforts following the tragic incident on 7th May, when a member of staff was killed as a result of an attack by a student on the Main Campus.
The University of Warsaw is developing a comprehensive approach to safety and security – with clearly defined procedures and structures. An emergency helpline and a safety and security website (https://bezpieczenstwo.uw.edu.pl/en) have been operational since the beginning of 2025. Pursuant to the Rector’s order of 30 June 2025, the Office for Safety and Security was established. In December 2025, the University signed an agreement with the Warsaw Police Headquarters covering cooperation, training, information exchange, the organisation of student work placements and the use of scientific research to promote safety. The powers of the university security service were also strengthened, and safety training was introduced for the university community.
The year 2025 was also marked by infrastructure development. On 23rd September, the new headquarters of the UW’s Faculty of Psychology in Ochota were officially opened. This is one of the projects being carried out as part of the “University of Warsaw 2016–2027” Multi-Annual Programme. In addition to this, work was continuing on the research and teaching building at Bednarska 2/4 and Student Hall No. 5 at Smyczkowa 5/7.
