On 21st August, the President of Portugal, Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, visited the University of Warsaw, where he delivered a lecture “The international situation, before, during and after”. “We are eager to develop the cooperation and exchange of students and researchers with Portuguese universities. I am convinced that this historic visit will further strengthen such initiatives,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, said.

Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has served as the President of the Portuguese Republic since 2016. As a lawyer, he has lectured at universities in Portugal (including the University of Lisbon) and abroad. He has also worked with civic institutions and associations.

 

On 21st August, a meeting between the UW community and the Portuguese President took place in the Column Hall of the Faculty of History.

 

“It is my great pleasure to welcome you at the University of Warsaw. Portuguese universities have always been open for Polish students and professors. It was especially important at the time of martial law. It is the right moment to say thank you for everything Portugal and Portuguese people have done for us. We are eager to develop the cooperation and exchange of students and researchers. I am convinced that this historic visit will further strengthen such initiatives,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, said.

 

The main point of the meeting was a lecture given by the President of Portugal “The international situation, before, during and after”. In his speech, Prof. Rebelo de Sousa referred to the geopolitical situation before the war in Ukraine as well as current challenges of the conflict. Lastly, the President also made predictions about the post-war world.

 

On behalf of the Senate of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, awarded the President of Portugal the University of Warsaw Medal.

 

“I feel at home. I was born having one dream in my life: to become law professor. I feel very honoured and happy to be here, at the very prestigious university,” Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said.
