June marks the 40th anniversary of the partnership between the UW and Saarland University. On 1st June, the celebrations of the jubilee were held at the University of Warsaw.

“We have very strong relations with Saarland University. Many of our academics and students have conducted research and studied there. This is where Prof. Sambor Grucza, the Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources defended his doctoral thesis,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector said.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of both Universities, including Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, Prof. Sambor Grucza, the UW Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources and Prof. Cornelius König, the Vice-President for Internationalization and European Relations of Saarland University.

“The celebration of this anniversary is particularly important as a moment to reflect on the origins and history of our relationship. In 1983, although Poland was geographically close, we did not know much about each other due to the border drawn by the Iron Curtain. Today’s visit by our delegation seems something of a given. On such occasions, it is worth reminding ourselves that it was not always the case,” Prof. Dr Cornelius König from Saarland University said.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the partnership, a memorial tree was planted on the UW main campus.
