English Studies at the UW have been running now for 100 years. The anniversary’s celebrations were held on 21st and 22nd April at the Institute of English Studies. They were accompanied by a series of lectures and other events.

The jubilee celebrations were open by Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Robert Małecki, the Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages and Prof. Agnieszka Piskorska, the Director of the Institute of English Studies. “I wish all the staff and students of English Studies more anniversaries like this one. I would like to thank you for a century of contributions to the University of Warsaw’s success,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said.

 

On the first day of the event, the Rector’s awards were given to the distinguished employees of the Institute of English Studies.

 

The beginnings of English Studies at the University of Warsaw date back to 1922. That year saw the establishment of the Department of English Studies. The Institute of English Studies is now the largest unit of the Faculty of Modern Languages, the University of Warsaw. The employees of the Institute of English Studies conduct research in fields such as multilingualism, multiculturalism, non-anthropocentric studies, disability studies, translation studies, history of language, and the work of Shakespeare.
