Research on riboswitches
08-04-2024…ical and Computational Modelling), and the RIKEN Advanced Centre for Computing and Communication. Riboswitches Riboswitches are segments of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) located in front of the protein-coding part of the mRNA. They change structure when they bind to specific small molecules, such as metabolites. This structural change of the riboswitch affects whether the protein is made or not. Influencing the state of riboswitches could provide contr…

Fish personalities

The researchers point out that in the contemporary global environmental crisis, freshwater habitats and their fish habitants are disproportionately both biodiverse and threatened. Thus, it is of crucial importance to understand how individual fishes cope with the anthropogenic change. The three major threats (damming, climate change, and chemica…

New perspectives in tumour treatment
05-04-2024…of the transcription factor called DMRTA2. The research results indicate that the DMRTA2 factor could be involved in the formation of new blood vessels to supply the tumour with nutrients. This factor could become a biomarker and a potential target for new therapeutic strategies in glioblastoma,” Dr Marta Maleszewska emphasised. The results of the research were presented in Cell Death and Disease: “DMRTA2 supports glioma stem-cell mediated neovasc…

Memorandum on nuclear energy
27-03-2024…eded. We have many talented students and doctoral candidates who can become experts in this field. This is possible thanks to the cooperation with Korean partners. I am grateful to scientists from the faculties of Physics, Chemistry and Oriental Studies and Korean universities for their openness, commitment and efforts to build mutual relations,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said during the ceremony of signing the Memorandum of Understand…

Grant for researchers from UW’s Centre for Quantum Optical Technologies
25-03-2024…precise microwave sensors, applicable to next-generation communication networks, applied metrology, terahertz devices and interference- and attack-resistant radars. The second key technology will be a matrix of trapped Rydberg atoms, which is one of the leading new technologies for computing (quantum computing) and quantum simulation. The team plans to make a device available for commercial applications and scientific partners in the future, as a…

Discussions on new technologies
20-03-2024…tek, the Deputy Mayor of Warsaw, and Prof. Agnieszka Hess, the Vice-President of the Polish Communication Association. “The extremely rapid development of new media, including immersive media, which deeply engage their users’ senses, poses enormous scientific and social challenges. We discussed them in order to look for a recipe for how to manage the relationship between humans and technology in times of immanent crises, so that the profit and l…

Groundbreaking research on mRNA
19-03-2024…tion with researchers from the Medical University of Warsaw and the UW spin-off company ExploRNA Therapeutics, have developed a new mRNA modification. The properties of the new molecule may be a breakthrough for modern medicine. Thanks to the discovery, it will be possible to further develop targeted therapies based on mRNA technology, including the treatment of rare diseases and the design of anticancer vaccines. Messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA)…

On the habits of mammals during the pandemic
19-03-2024…recorded 163 mammal species living in twenty-one countries. The researchers compared data on the animals’ habits before the pandemic and during the lockdowns to see what impact changes in human activity had on animal behaviour. The authors found that mammal activity in more developed areas (such as cities) increased when human activity was higher. Mammals showed less activity in less developed areas. However, differences between animal groups w…
