Over 65,000 registrations and 35,111 applicants, including 2,500 from abroad – on 22nd September, the second part of admission results was announced for full-time first-cycle and full-time long-cycle programmes, as well as part of other studies at the University of Warsaw in the academic year 2023/2024. As regards the number of applicants per place, medicine was the most popular programme.

The IRK system at the University of Warsaw registered 35,111 candidates, who made over 65,000 applications (which includes over 56,000 applications for first-cycle and full-cycle programmes, and over 9,000 applications for second-cycle programmes).

These are only partial results – the enrolment for some of second-cycle programmes remains open. More information on the admission timelines and the announcement of the results can be found in the descriptions of the individual fields of study on the IRK website and the appendix no. 4 of the resolution of the UW Senate.

The documents from qualified candidates will be accepted by admission committees at faculties and units from 25th September. Information on the exact date, time and venue of documents submission are available in the candidates’ individual accounts in the IRK system.

New programmes of the studies

New programmes of studies at the University of Warsaw in the academic year 2023/2024 include:

• Applied Multilingual and Multicultural Studies, full-time, second-cycle programme in English;
• Biofizyka (Biophysics), full-time, first-cycle programme in Polish;
• Quantum Physics and Chemistry – Individual Research Studies, full-time, second-cycle programme in English;
• Geoinformatyka i geofizyka w geoinżynierii (Geoinformatics and Geophysics in Geoengineering), full-time, first-cycle programme in Polish;
• Kierunek lekarski (Medicine), full-time, full-cycle programme in Polish;
• Language Science and Technology, full-time, second-cycle programme in English;
• Social and Public Policy, full-time, first-cycle programme in English;
• Cyberbezpieczeństwo (Cybersecurity), full-time, second-cycle programme in Polish;
• Polityka kulturalna i zarządzanie w kulturze (Cultural Policy and Management), full-time, second-cycle programme in Polish;
• Polityka publiczna (Public Politics), full-time, second-cycle programme in Polish;
• Nanoinżynieria (Nanoengineering), full-time, second-cycle programme in Polish (admissions from the summer semester);
• History of Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations, full-time, second-cycle programme in English;
• EU Energy and Climate Law, full-time, second-cycle programme in English.

The most popular of the new programmes were Medicine, Geoinformatics and Geophysics in Geoengineering, and Social and Public Policy.

Medicine at the UW

This year, medical teaching will return to the University of Warsaw after a 70-year hiatus. On 10th January, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, submitted an application for establishing and commencing a full-cycle academic programme in medicine at the University of Warsaw in 2023/2024 academic year to the Ministry of Education and Science.

The programme of the studies was approved by the Senate of the University of Warsaw on 16th November 2022. The Minister of Health handed over a symbolic cheque to the University in the amount of PLN 40 million in revenue bonds for activities related to the establishment of a medical degree programme.

The application filed in January was accepted by the Minister of Health and the Polish Accreditation Committee. As a consequence, on 11th July, the Minister of Education and Science approved the establishing of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Warsaw.

The programme of medical studies at the University of Warsaw is distinguished by its emphasis on the scientific development of students. This process will be conducted through the implementation of practice-based teaching, direct contact with patients and the application of clinical practice from the beginning of studies. Moreover, the compulsory participation of each student in at least one scientific research project in the six-year study cycle will be a unique educational element on a national level.

The innovative new technologies in medicine will be used appropriately in the study programme. Furthermore, the humanisation of medicine will be a distinguishing feature of the medical education at the University of Warsaw. The idea concentrates on the efficient and effective doctor-patient communication, attitude and relation.

International candidates

Over 2,500 international candidates registered to study at the UW in the 2023/2024 academic year. They filed in total over 3,500 applications. Most candidates come from Ukraine, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and China.

The following study programmes were most popular among international candidates: Finance, International Investment and Accounting, full-time, first-cycle programme; English Studies – Linguistics, English Studies – Literature and Culture, full-time, first-cycle programme; Undergraduate Programme in International Relations, full-time, first-cycle programme; Informatics, full-time, first-cycle programme; Management, full-time, first-cycle programme; Psychologia (Psychology), full-time, full-cycle programme.

Admissions for applicants from Ukraine

As in the previous year, the limits were set for each programme of the studies available only to Ukrainian citizens, who came to Poland as a result of the warfare carried out on the Ukrainian territory. In the 2023/2024 academic year, there will be 1,000 places of this kind.

Candidates from Ukraine can apply for admission to study at the University of Warsaw via the Online Admission System for Candidates from Ukraine, prepared by the UW in cooperation with the Inter-University Centre for Informatisation (MUCI).

According to the preliminary results, candidates from Ukraine made over 680 applications to study at the University of Warsaw with 159 candidates admitted to the UW (on 26th September 2023).
