The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy released the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) presenting the world top 500 universities. UW was ranked between 301-400.
The Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) is considered as one of the most prestigious university rankings in the world. It has been published since 2003. In the latest edition of the ranking, the University of Warsaw, similarly to last year, was listed between 301 and 400. It is the highest position among Polish universities.
ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers, the number of articles published in journals of “Nature” and “Science”, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance.
Besides the University of Warsaw, the top 500 universities also included another Polish university, the Jagiellonian University, which was ranked between 401-500.
In 2018, the authors of the ranking also published a list of those universities ranked between 501 and 1000 in the world (ARWU World Top 500 Candidates 2018). 10 Polish universities were included as candidates: the AGH University of Science and Technology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Medical University of Warsaw, Warsaw University of Technology, Medical University of Silesia, Lodz University of Technology, Nicolaus Copernicus University, University of Lodz, University of Wroclaw, and Wroclaw University of Technology.
