The Open Science Policy, two repositories and regular workshops on Open Science contribute to the implementation of the HR strategy for researchers at the University of Warsaw. As part of the “Spring with HR Excellence in Research” series, we present the activities carried out by the University of Warsaw Library.

Transparency, accessibility and collaboration are the pillars upon which the modern research environment at the University of Warsaw is built. Thanks to the repository infrastructure, administrative support and a training system, the university community is provided with tools enabling the sharing of research results in accordance with new regulations.

Open Science Policy and repositories

In 2024, two open repositories were launched at the University of Warsaw: UW Research Data and the Institutional Repository of the University of Warsaw (ReIn UW), which collects publications. The repositories form an infrastructure that enables authors affiliated with the UW to deposit, archive and openly share raw research data, publications, conference materials, teaching materials and other types of documents.

On 31st July 2025, the University of Warsaw adopted its Open Science Policy and joined the ranks of universities that systematically and long-term support openness in science. In accordance with the provisions of the Policy, every academic publication authored by a person affiliated with the UW must be deposited in the Institutional Repository of the University of Warsaw and made available in open access. Accordingly, research data generated in the course of academic work must be deposited in the UW Research Data Repository and/or in trusted subject-specific repositories.

The text of the Policy and the concept of the University of Warsaw Institutional Repository were developed by representatives of the Institutional Repository of the University of Warsaw: Karolina Minch (the Rector’s representative for open science) and Anna Książczak-Gronowska (Head of the Research Support Department at the University of Warsaw Library). Support in preparing the Policy was provided by Jakub Szprot and Wojciech Fenrich, representing the UW’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM), the creators of the UW Research Data Repository.

Karolina Minch writes about the Open Science Policy at the UW in the university’s magazine “UW” (No. 1/118, 2026)

Workshops on Open Science

Open for You! is a series of workshops coordinated and run since 2021 by the libraries of the 4EU+ Alliance. They are aimed primarily at doctoral candidates, though participants include also representatives of libraries and other university units supporting research.

The workshop programme covers various aspects of implementing open science in the research process and in scientific communication. Dr Zuza Wiorogórska, the BUW (University of Warsaw Library) Director’s representative for the 4EU+ Alliance, the Erasmus+ programme and information literacy, is a co-author of the programme and co-facilitator of the workshops.
