We publish the release concerning the detention of UW students in Nigeria.

“The students are safe and currently remain in Abuja,” the Chancellor of the Bayero University in Kano assured the UW Rector.

The University authorities are acting in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Polish and foreign consular services and other institutions, as well as being in contact with students’ families.

“The release of the six African Studies students and the lecturer from our University detained on Nigerian territory is my priority. For the second day, I am almost exclusively involved in solving this problem,” said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector. “Many people are committed to the release. I am convinced that these efforts are bringing us closer to a positive conclusion of the situation,” the Rector added.

The University cannot provide all the information on actions taken so far and currently in progress, as this could hinder the work of the services involved. The safety of detainees is of the utmost importance and this determines the actions and the extent of the information to be given.

We fully empathise with the pain and anxiety of the families of the students, realising that the only news expected by all is that of the release of the detainees.
