“We are delighted to open a new hall of residence at the University of Warsaw as part of an investment created for students and doctoral candidates, designed and created in collaboration with them,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said. “Sulimy” – the new UW student hall of residence – is located in the Służewiec Campus and has 130 rooms which will accommodate more than 380 people. The investment is part of the Multiannual Plan “University of Warsaw 2016–2027”.

The opening of the new UW hall of residence, located on Sulimy 4, took place on 17th September, and the accommodation of the first residents will soon begin. There are 382 places waiting for them in single and double rooms.

“This is a very important investment, because it has created a modern hall of residence that can be used primarily by UW students and doctoral candidates. This investment allows us to set a new standard in student accommodation. The housing conditions are very important because it is here, outside the university, that students and doctoral candidates spend most of their time,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, said during the opening ceremony.

“I am glad to be here. I would like to congratulate the entire community of the University of Warsaw on this investment. I know how much work and effort was required for its implementation. As Minister of Science, I assure you that we will carry out a programme of social support, including subsidies for the renovation and construction of halls of residence in Poland,” Dariusz Wieczorek, Minister of Science and Higher Education, said.

Rooms are either single or combined into segments of two or four rooms. The four-room segments are equipped with a kitchenette and sanitary facilities. Inhabitants of the hall of residence also have a number of shared areas at their disposal, i.e. gym, common room, kitchen with dining room, laundry and drying room, as well as work and quiet study spaces. Next to the building there is a sports area, a bicycle room and park alleys. There is underground parking on -1 level.

“This is the only hall of residence built from scratch under the UW’s Multiannual Plan. In addition, the programme includes the redoing of two other student halls of residence. The building on Sulimy is the first newly constructed UW hall of residence in several decades. The building meets all standards of modern residential construction with numerous environmentally friendly solutions. Modern pro-environmental and energy-saving solutions, such as a ventilation heat pump, heat recovery from exhaust air and photovoltaic modules, have been incorporated into the building’s design,” Prof. Ewa Krogulec, the UW’s Vice-Rector for Development, said.

The edifice is characterised by a simple, modern form, designed on a quadrilateral plan reminiscent of a windmill. It has eight storeys – seven above ground and one underground. The total area of the building is almost 13,000 m² and the usable area is almost 6,000 m². Construction of the hall of residence lasted from December 2021. The total cost of the project was PLN 94.9 million.

Accessibility and functionality

“When realising this investment, we took into account the opinion of students – future inhabitants of the new hall of residence. It was they who were our best advisers, drawing our attention to aspects important to them in terms of functionality, accessibility or environmentally-friendly solutions for both the entire building and individual rooms,” Robert Grey, the UW Chancellor, said.

The building and its immediate surroundings are fully accessible to people with mobility, hearing and visual impairments. Each floor has at least one room with a kitchenette adapted for wheelchair users. Moving around the building is also facilitated by public lifts.

External blinds and additional insulation of the walls are also an advantage, which will keep the building comfortable all year round. Permeable surfaces have been used around the building to facilitate the proper circulation of rainwater.

“We are committed to providing students and doctoral candidates with the best possible living and studying conditions. We wanted to create modern interiors that would allow students and doctoral candidates for comfortable living and studying, while also fostering integration. In addition, modernisation work is being carried out at the University, thanks to which we are constantly increasing the number of available places in student halls of residence,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, emphasised.

Interested persons can also take advantage of the other UW halls of residence, which are located on Żwirki i Wigury (DS no. 1 and DS no. 2), Kickiego (DS no. 3), Zamenhofa (DS no. 4 ), Smyczkowa (DS no. 5) and Radomska (DS no. 6). Prices in Student Hall of Residence No. 7 “Sulimy” in the 2024/2025 academic year vary, depending on the room, from PLN950 to PLN1,100 a month per person.
