On 10th January Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, duly submitted an application for establishing and commencing long-cycle academic programme in medicine at the University of Warsaw in 2023/2024 academic year to the Ministry of Education and Science.

The application has been prepared by the working groups involved in the designing of the medical education at the UW: the Group for Medical Infrastructure and the Group for Medical Studies Programming. The groups were established by the UW Rector’s resolution no. 47 dated 11th April 2022 to design proper procedures in order to set up the Faculty of Medicine at the UW.

 

Prof. Sławomir Żółtek, the UW Vice-Rector for Students and Quality of Teaching, is monitoring the groups while Prof. Zbigniew Izdebski, the Chairman of the Scientific Council for the Discipline of Pedagogy, is also the Chairman of the Group for Medical Studies Programming as well as the Coordinator of both groups. Chancellor Robert Grey is the Chairman of the Group for Medical Infrastructure. As appointed by the Vice-Rector for Students and Quality of Teaching, the Office for Innovation in Teaching and Learning, and the Human Resources Office supported by representatives of the Teaching and Learning Support Centre have been responsible for administrative processes.

 

The programme of the studies was duly approved by the Senate of the University of Warsaw on 18th November 2022. Both groups have been in charge of working out the programme of the medical studies as well as preparing appropriate infrastructure required to commence teaching of prospective doctors of medicine on 1st October 2023.

 

The application to the Ministry of Education and Science for commencing the programme of the medical studies as well as the content-based work by the two groups were completed on 10th January. That day was held an official meeting of the two groups, together with representatives of the Military Institute of Medicine ­– National Research Institute (MIM-NRI): Maj. Gen. Prof. Grzegorz Gielerak and Prof. Bolesław Kalicki as the Vice-Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Military Institute of Medicine and the Masovian Consultant in Paediatrics. Since 14th October 2022, as the agreement between the UW and the MIM-NRI was signed, both parties have been cooperating to agree and establish organisation, education and research to be conducted at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Warsaw.

 

Prior to the Minister of Education and Science’s decision on the new medical programme at the University of Warsaw, their opinion about the submitted application should confer the Minister of Health and the Polish Accreditation Committee.
