Six doctoral candidates and three researchers from the University of Warsaw are among the Polish Fulbright Programme grantees who have spent several months at US universities and institutions during the 2023/2024 academic year. The graduation ceremony of this year’s grantees took place on 13th September.
The Fulbright programme is one of the most prestigious academic, scientific and cultural exchange programmes in the world. It enables students, scientists and professionals from various fields to pursue studies, research or training in the United States. In Poland, the Fulbright programme has been operating since 1959. The Polish-American Fulbright Commission awards scholarships for travel to the USA to Polish citizens in various categories, such as:
- Junior Award – for doctoral candidates who wish to conduct research in the United States as part of their dissertation;
- Senior Award – for researchers who wish to conduct research or teach at US universities;
- STEM Impact Award – for researchers and professionals in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) who can conduct research and establish collaborations with US institutions;
- Slavic Award – for scholars whose interests are related to culture (literature, media, art) or the history, politics, economics of Poland and Central and Eastern Europe.
In the 2023/2024 academic year, nine people from the University of Warsaw benefited from a trip to the United States as part of the scholarship. On 13th September, the graduation ceremony of the 49th grantees took place at the Banker’s Club in Warsaw. Diplomas were presented by Mark Brzezinski, the US Ambassador to Poland.

- Zuzanna Kiwerska, doctoral candidate in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School, humanities, host institution: University of Illinois-Chicago;
- Tomasz Łuszczek, doctoral candidate in the Doctoral School of Humanities, humanities, linguistics, host institution: University of California-Berkeley;
- Maciej Tarnowski, doctoral candidate in the Doctoral School of Humanities, humanities, philosophy, host institution: Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

- Maciej Lisicki, Faculty of Physics, science, physics, host institution: University of Pennsylvania.
Slavic Award category:
- Dr Michał Oleszczyk, Faculty of „Artes Liberales”, humanities, film/cinematography, host institution: University of Illinois-Chicago, humanities.
