From 21st to 22nd of April 2016, the University of Warsaw will host an international conference “Life in Palmyra, life for Palmyra”.

The conference program features presentations of over 30 leading specialists on Palmyrene studies. The scholars represent various international archaeological expeditions working in Palmyra, including a PCMA mission, as well as Syrian archaeologists specializing in this field. The conference is dedicated to Khaled al As’ad, the late director of the Palmyra Museum. On this occasion, a lecture hall in the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw, will be named after him.

 

The conference is co-organized by the Institute of Archaeology and the Zygmunt Zaleski Foundation, in cooperation with the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology.

 

“Life in Palmyra, life for Palmyra” will take place on 21st April from 9.00 to 19.00 in J. Brudziński hall in the Pałac Kazimierzowski (Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28) and on 22nd April from 11.00 to 18.00 in Column hall in Institute of History (Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28) .

Two Polish specialists representing the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology visited Palmyra just a few days after it has been taken over from the ISIS by Syrian government forces. Conservator, Bartosz Markowski and archaeologist, Robert Żukowski were there from April 8th till April 14th, following an invitation extended to the PCMA by the Syrian Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums. They were the first foreign experts to reach the city. They will present their observations on the state of Palmyra’s antiquities during a press conference on 20th April 2015, at 12.00 in the hall of the Kazimierzowski Palace at the University of Warsaw main campus, Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28.
