On 19th November the University of Warsaw marked 200th anniversary of its foundation. Gala jubilee concert completed yearlong celebrations.

 

The University of Warsaw was established on 19th November 1816 by Tsar Alexander I.  Few days ago we celebrated the round anniversary of the UW foundation. How did this special day look like?

 

Ready, steady, go

On 19th November a meter located on the Old Library building, that is counting out one thousand days till the final celebration, stopped On this occasion at 16.30 in front of the Old Library building the special ceremony began. The UW Main Campus looked festive. Participants tried a piece of birthday cake, watched fireworks and university’s mapping. Everyone was welcome.

 

 

Concert in the Warsaw Philharmonic

During this event Polish composer Paweł Szymański presented his own composition “Through the Looking-Glass”, created especially in celebration of 200th anniversary of the UW. Guests listened the Piano Concerto No. 1in E minor, Op. 11 written by F. Chopin, that was performed by the laureate of the 16th International Chopin Piano Competition – Yulianna Avdeeva. The concert took place at the Warsaw Philharmonic.

 

 

More than one

 Since one year the University of Warsaw has been organizing plenty of events related to the 200th anniversary of its establishment. Among the most spectacular were the UW Alumni World Reunion, academic meetings “Discover the UW”, Warsaw Boat Race, University’s Time Machine – the University 200 years ago and the cycle of Chopin concerts.
