The University of Warsaw launches the emergency collection to help provide humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees. Free legal counselling is also offered. We are publishing the current initiatives by the UW students, doctoral candidates and employees.

Food and other essential supplies

The UW Institute of Polish Culture is collecting items for 31 families from Ukraine staying in Warsaw now. The list of needed items is provided on the Institute FB profile >> (only in Polish).

 

The humanitarian assistance is being organised by the UW Faculty of Political Science and International Studies together with the HumanDoc Foundation. The collection point is open seven days a week from 8.00 to 20.00 in the Faculty building at 67 Nowy Świat, level -1. Only the listed items are accepted. Emergency supplies for the Ukrainian are being collected by the UW Student Council together with the UW Doctoral Candidate Council, UW Volunteer Centre and UW Open University. Donations can be left in room 100 of the UW Student Council building, the UW Main Campus at 24 Krakowskie Przedmieście, between 8:00-20:00 (Mon-Fri) and 10:00-18:00 (Sat-Sun). On 4th March, the Department of Ukrainian Studies launched another collection of items such as surgical gloves, elastic bandages, compression bandages, tourniquets, analgesics and  anti-inflammatory medicines. Convoys with the humanitarian aid deliver the collected items to the Ukrainians in need. More details of the collection is provided on the Department website >>

 

Donations in kind are being collected by the UW Faculty of Management and the Student Council of the UW Faculty of Management, together with the Municipal Office of the Capital City of Warsaw. Non-cash charitable contributions, such as food and essential supplies, can be delivered to the ground floor of the “C” building, the Faculty of Management, 1/3 Szturmowa Street, Warsaw. Prof. Joanna Gretka from the UW Faculty of Applied Linguistics is raising funds for Ukrainian universities. The money is collected for the psychological support of students and academics who suffer from the current military crisis. On 4th March, the UW Faculty of Philosophy together with the Polish Red Cross, the Masovian District, launched the collection of long-lasting food items, toiletries, healthcare products, blankets and sleeping bags. The collection point is open every day from 10:00 at 3 Krakowskie Przedmieście, room no. 7 on the ground floor. More details in English are available on the Faculty website >> .

 

Between 28th February and 3rd March (not later than 12:00), the UW Faculty of Polish Studies organised the action called #PolonDlaUkrainy. Under the action, food, hygiene products and other essential supplies were being collected. The updated list of necessary items is available on https://docs.google.com (only in Polish).

 

All the gathered items will be delivered to the Reception Point in Dorohusk, where Ukrainian refugees are offered humanitarian assistance, medical aid, accommodation, etc. The emergency aid supplies are being collected in the main building of the Faculty of Polish Studies, the UW Main Campus at 26/28 Krakowskie Przedmieście. The UW Centre for Europe, has launched collections for the military and citizens sheltering in the underground stations in Ukraine. The collected items will be transferred to those in need within the Ukrainian territory. Emergency aid items include sleeping bags, pillows, and medical equipment and dressing such as bandages, antiseptics, analgesics, trauma and pain relief creams. The collection point is located in the building of the UW Centre for Europe, 11 Niepodległości Ave. The point is open from Monday to Thursday between 8:00-15:00, room 210, and Friday between 8:00-15:00, room 202 (Dean’s office). The emergency supplies for hospitals, paramedics, soldiers and refugees from Ukraine are being collected by the UW Faculty of Physics. The products can be delivered to room 1.12, 1st floor, next to the Dean’s office, between 7:00-20:00, the Faculty building at 5 Pasteura Street, the Ochota campus. Large-size items, e.g. cardboard boxes, stretchers, should be delivered between 8:00-16:00 to the room 0.18 on the ground floor. On the 3rd March the Department of Ukrainian Studies launched a collection of emergency items. The collection point is open between 10:00-18:00. The Students’ Union of the Faculty of Management in cooperation with the UW Faculty of Management raised funds for medical equipment, which is needed to cure victims of the war in Ukraine. The fundraising was finished on 30th March. More information is available on the Faculty website >> (only in Polish).

 

The UW Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology was raising funds for their partner University in Ivano-Frankivsk. The Ukrainian university became a refugee camp for the people who had to flee from the eastern part of the country and Kiev. After 22nd March the raised funds were transferred to the bank account of the University in Ivano-Frankivsk. The collected money will be spent on medicines, bandages, wound dressings, toiletries etc. More information about the fundraising is provided on the Institute website >> (only in Polish).

 

Free legal assistance

The UW Welcome Point offers procedural assistance in the legalisation of residence in Poland of foreign students, doctoral candidates and employees. More information is provided on the WP website >>

 

Legal counselling in the Polish and Ukrainian languages is offered by the UW Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and Resocialisation. In general, the free legal assistance is available via the internet. In particular situations, the onsite counselling is also possible. Details are presented on the Faculty website >>

 

The University of Warsaw Law Clinic, together with the UW Student Council, is organising free of charge legal counselling to the Ukrainian students at the University of Warsaw. Translating and communication assistance

The Language Support Centre at the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Faculty of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw, offers free assistance in foreign language translating for special purposes, i.e. medical, legal etc. Under the Programmes “Tandem” and “Spotkajmy się”, Ukrainian citizens are offered help in the Polish language education, as well as in learning Polish culture in the everyday life. Academics from the UW Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners “Polonicum”, prepared a textbook for Ukrainian children and teenagers who want to learn Polish. The textbook entitled “Raz, dwa, trzy i po polsku mówisz Ty!” comprises five books corresponding to five proficiency levels. Each book has supplements for teachers. Although the textbook was prepared for the education of the Polish language in Ukraine a few years ago, the materials can be used successfully as a self-study guide. The textbook was issued by the University of Warsaw Press, the “Wolność i Demokracja” Foundation, and the UW Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners “Polonicum”, in cooperation with the Methodological Centre for Teaching Polish in Drohobycz. The textbook is authorised by the Ministry of Education and Science, Ukraine. In cooperation with the Office for Foreigners of the Masovian Voivodship Office in Warsaw, the UW Centre for Europe and the UW Faculty of Political Science and International Studies are seeking for volunteers who can communicate in Ukrainian and Russian to provide the administrative support to Ukrainian citizens. Psychological support

A new dedicated web page on the website of the UW Faculty of Psychology „Pomoc w związku z kryzysem wojennym” (Support during the war crisis) displays information on various forms of psychological support that are available for the Ukrainian refugees at the University of Warsaw, as well as psychologically related educational activities.

The web page provides information on the UW Psychological Support Centre, online meetings with students who work with Polish and Ukrainian children, as well as other data on psychology-associated meetings, workshops and webinars organised at the Faculty. The Faculty of Psychology organises a series of online meetings under the title „Uważność i współczucie w kryzysie. Jak zadbać o siebie i innych” (Mindfulness and compassion in crisis. Taking care about others and yourself.) Besides talking about their experiences, the attendees will learn to meditate and practise mindfulness. The meetings are carried out via Zoom each Wednesday at 19:30, starting 16th March. They are conducted by Prof. Assist. Pawel Holas of the Faculty of Psychology, a mindfulness teacher and therapist. The Paulina Kuczalska-Reinschmit Student Association provides the regularly updated list of the organisations and institutions that offer psychological support for people who had to flee from Ukraine. Anyone from Ukraine who needs to consult an internal diseases specialist is advised to refer to Prof. Józef Haczyński, Doctor of Medicine from the UW Faculty of Management. Academic support

Professor Michał Tomza and his colleagues from the Tomza Group on Quantum Molecular System invites Ukrainian scientists who specialise in quantum physics and chemistry for the scientific cooperation. The Centre for Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics  will cover the accommodation cost of the visiting scientists/professors in Warsaw for the coming weeks or months. Debates, lectures and workshops

Open classes in physics and mathematics

Ukrainian citizens can participate in classes in physics and mathematics at the UW Faculty of Physics. Polish and English are languages of instruction. Anyone interested to join the classes should email the organisers providing brief information on the previous education and the preferred language of instruction. Classes in Polish and Russian are soon to be launched as well. Teachers will focus on the high school educational material of physics and mathematics. The online Erasmus course “Ukraine in International Relations” for international students

The UW Centre for Europe launched a 15-hour Erasmus course “Ukraine in International Relations”. The course is available for international students from the University of Warsaw. The online meeting will be conducted by Dr Oksana Krayevska, a lecturer at the Faculty of International Relations, Ivan Franko University of Lviv, and an associate professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Studies, and the Centre for Europe, University of Warsaw.

The lecture starts on 25th April. Meetings are conducted every Monday between 11:30 and 13:00 on the Google Meet. Registration is open via USOSweb up to 1st April, with the second registration available between 2nd -9th April. Biology seminars for high school graduates

The UW Faculty of Biology organises a series of seminars for young Ukrainians who intend to sit for the Polish or Ukrainian matura exam, attend a Polish high school or studies in Poland. The seminars  cover the biology material for the Polish and Ukrainian matura exam. The classes will be translated into Ukrainian. The first meeting will take place on 31st March. Courses of Polish as a foreign language

The University of Warsaw Library is organising free onsite courses of Polish as a foreign language.  Course participants can broaden their vocabulary and practise conversational skills. The course starts 23rd March (Wednesday) at 11:00. Classes are conducted at the UW Library building, room no. 139. Prior registration is highly recommended via a.linevich2(at)uw.edu.pl. The Open University is organising free courses of the Polish language for the Ukrainian citizens. The courses are dedicated to teenagers (over 16) and adults. The Centre for East European Studies and the School of Eastern Languages are launching courses of Ukrainian for beginners. Students, employees and volunteers can attend the courses free of charge. “Ukraine 2022” open lecture series

The UW Centre for East European Studies (CEES) organises the online open lecture series “Ukraine 2022”. The lecturers analyse the ongoing events in Ukraine, their background and possible consequences. The meetings are carried out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 18.00-20.00 (including questions from the audience), in the Polish and English languages. The CMR Spotlight Special Issue on the Russian aggression on Ukraine and forced migrations: the role of Poland in the first days of the crisis

In the special issue of the CMR Spotlight, the research team from the UW Centre of Migration Studies is describing the most important facts associated with forced migrations induced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, its consequences, reactions of the EU, Poland and the Polish society. The researchers also recommend further initiatives to reduce the impact of the crisis. The webinar on the humanitarian crisis

The UW Centre of Migration Research is organising the webinar about challenges associated with refugees in Poland, as well as results and consequences of other crises in Europe. This was the second meeting of the series of webinars on the humanitarian crisis, which was launched by the Centre of Migration Research. How can you recognise disinformation? (Jak rozpoznawać dezinformację?)
What is fake news, and who can you recognise it? How can you detect that a post is written by a bot, or created to disseminate false information? These topics were discussed during the online workshops that were organised by the Volunteer Centre of the University of Warsaw and the UW Welcome Point. The online meetings could be attended by students, doctoral candidates, employees and retired employees of the University. The workshops in the Polish language took place on 8th March, 17:00-20:00. The Webinar of the School of Education of the Polish-American Freedom Foundation and University of Warsaw

At 17:00, 4th March, the Polish-American Freedom Foundation and University of Warsaw School of Education organised the webinar under the title “How can get prepared for new children from Ukraine in the class?” (Jak przygotować się do przyjęcia ukraińskich dzieci w klasie?). The online meeting was directed to teachers, headmasters, volunteers and parents. Experts – intercultural assistants and teachers from the Ukrainian House in Warsaw – were discussing vital issues associated with integrated skills of children and teenagers, from psychological, cultural and didactic views. The debate at the Faculty of History

On 28th February, the UW Faculty of History hosted the debate entitled “Dzieje Ukrainy à la russe…”. The participants discussed the history of Ukraine, fake news on the Ukraine-Russia line, modern correlations between those countries and the current war. The debate was attended by Prof. Joanna Getka from the Department of Central and Eastern European Intercultural Studies, Faculty of Applied Linguistics, Dr Bartłomiej Gajos from the Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Hieronim Grala from the Faculty of “Artes Liberales”, and Dr Piotr Kroll and Prof. Artur Markowski from the Faculty of History who were monitoring the debate. The onsite event took place in the Column Hall of the Faculty of History building, 26/28 Krakowskie Przedmieście (free and reduced admission). The lecture in the Centre for East European Studies

On 28th February, the Centre for East European Studies organised an online lecture “Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: What Happened and Why it Matters”. The meeting was attended by scientists from Santa Clara University: Prof. Jane Curry, a UW visiting professor and an expert in Eastern politics from the SCU Department of Political Science, and Prof. David Sloss from the SCU School of Law, an expert in international law. The webinar by the Open University
