On 11th February, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, met with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Poland. The talks with Miguel Berger focused on the possibilities of expanding academic cooperation with German institutions and implementing joint research projects.

The University of Warsaw hosted the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Poland, Miguel Berger.

The discussions, attended by Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of UW, concerned the development of international cooperation in joint research projects, education, and academic exchange.

Also present at the meeting were Prof. Sambor Grucza, UW Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources; Prof. Zygmunt Lalak, UW Vice-Rector for Research; Grażyna Andrejuk from the UW international Relations Office; and Dr. Monika Schidorowitz, Head of the Science and Research Department at the Embassy.

“Cooperation between the University of Warsaw and German universities in the field of academic exchange and joint research activities is developing very well. We hope it will become even more enhanced in the future,” said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the UW.

The meeting also addressed, among other topics, the scope of cooperation between the University of Warsaw and Heidelberg University within the framework of the 4EU+ Alliance. The 4EU+ Alliance is one of the university’s strategic initiatives. It brings together eight European research universities: the University of Warsaw, Sorbonne University, Heidelberg University, Charles University, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Milan, the University of Geneva, and Paris-Panthéon-Assas University. The cooperation involves conducting joint world-class research, developing joint degree programs and educational offerings, training doctoral candidates, and undertaking initiatives related to innovation, technology transfer, and universities’ social responsibility.

The beginnings of cooperation between the University of Warsaw and German universities in academic exchange and joint research date back to 1959 (an agreement with Humboldt University of Berlin) and 1978 (the first agreement with a West German university—the University of Bonn). UW actively cooperates under university-wide agreements also with the universities of Hamburg, Mainz, Saarbrücken, Konstanz, and Tübingen, as well as with 62 partner institutions within the framework of the Erasmus+ Programme.
