From October 1st to 3rd, first-year doctoral candidates took part in the “Good Start” implementation programme. Thanks to the involvement of UW’s units and central offices, young researchers were able to learn about the university’s rich offer right at the beginning of their education – from social support and assistance in carrying out research projects to cultural and sports activities.

The central implementation programme for new doctoral candidates at the University of Warsaw was carried out on the initiative of Prof. Adam Niewiadomski, Vice-Rector for Doctoral and Legal Affairs, with the support of university-wide offices and units. It included several meetings with, among others, representatives of the Office for Personnel Social Benefits, the Scientific Councils Office, the Academic Sports Association, the Research Services Office, the Office for International Research and Liaison, Welcome Point, the International Relations Office, and the Folk Song and Dance Ensemble “Warszawianka”. Sławomir Obliński, acting director of security, spoke about security issues at the UW.

In addition to meetings in lecture halls, doctoral candidates had the opportunity to take part in a walk around the Main Campus and the Ochota Campus, organised by the UW Museum, as well as in library training combined with a tour of the University of Warsaw Library.

The three-day adaptation programme also provided an opportunity for newly admitted doctoral candidates to integrate. Workshops organised by the UW’s Psychological Support Centre played a special role, fostering relationship building and mutual acquaintance among participants.

Inauguration of the academic year

The highlight of the implementation programme was the ceremonial inauguration of the 2025/2026 academic year at the UW’s doctoral schools.

“You are among the top doctoral candidates in Poland. The level of doctoral schools is getting higher and higher. We owe this not only to the lecturers, but also to your passion for research. Strive for success,” said Prof.  Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, addressing the doctoral candidates.

A commemorative speech was also given by Prof. Adam Niewiadomski, Vice-Rector for Doctoral and Legal Affairs.

“The door to my office is always open. Come with your good ideas, successes, and awards. We are doing everything we can to make your time at the University as pleasant as possible,” said Prof. Adam Niewiadomski.

The inaugural lecture entitled “Interdyscyplinarność a dobre życie” (ENG: “Interdisciplinarity and the good life”) was given by Dr. Ivan Dimitrijević from the Faculty of “Artes Liberales”.
