On 8th March, 1968, a protest rally took place on the Main Campus of the UW against restrictions on freedom of speech and the policies of the authorities of the time. Each year, members of the university community, residents of Warsaw, and guests gather at the plaque commemorating these events. This year’s ceremony will begin at 12:00 p.m.
The demonstration 58 years ago, which took place in the university courtyard at Krakowskie Przedmieście, sparked a wave of student protests across the country. The events lasted from 8th to 23rd March and were directly caused by political decisions to remove Kazimierz Dejmek’s production of Dziady from the National Theatre’s repertoire and to expel Adam Michnik and Henryk Szlajfer from the UW’s Faculty of History.
Traditionally, on 8th March, anniversary commemorations will take place on the UW’s Main Campus. The university community, residents of Warsaw, and guests will gather at 12:00 p.m. behind the Main Gate, at the commemorative plaque.
Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, invites you to a ceremony marking the 58th anniversary of the 1968 Polish political crisis at the plaque commemorating the student protests.
