Spain, Ireland, Colombia, Morocco, Portugal, Slovenia, United Kingdom, Italy. Thanks to the Erasmus+ programme, students from the University of Warsaw take classes or internships in various parts of the world. Thirteen such places have been captured in the first edition of the FotoErasmus+ calendar.
The calendar contains thirteen photographs taken by UW students during their scholarship stays abroad as part of the Erasmus+ programme. The photos were selected in the “FotoErasmus+ 2023” competition organised by the UW International Relations Office. The result is the first edition of the University’s Erasmus calendar.

Twenty-six years of the Erasmus programme at the UW
Erasmus+ is a European Union programme which enables students, doctoral candidates and graduates to undertake part of their studies or internships abroad. Academic teachers can work at partner universities, and administrative employees can receive training, during which they have the opportunity to learn about the solutions applied in other institutions.
The programme was established by the European Commission in 1987. Its name is an acronym for the words EuRopean Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students. It symbolically refers to the Renaissance thinker – Erasmus of Rotterdam.
Poland joined the Erasmus programme on 1st March 1998, but already in February 1997 the Senate of the UW decided to begin preparations for participation in the programme.
The first twenty-three students came to the University in the 1998/1999 academic year; 176 students and thirty-seven members of academic staff left the UW. The project budget the university received for organising the exchange was EUR442,000.
Currently, the UW cooperates with around 600 universities and foreign entities, and participates in many international projects supporting the development of innovation and the exchange of good practices between higher education institutions.
Participation in the programme contributes to the university’s internationalisation and global visibility. It is also the basis for cooperation between the eight European universities from the 4EU+ Alliance, of which UW is a member. More information on the 4EU+ Alliance >>.
European Commission Awards
The University of Warsaw is one of the European universities that sends the largest number of students and manages programmes with the largest funding. The UW’s active participation in the Erasmus programme has been awarded several times by the European Commission. The University’s rewards include a “Złoty Erasm” (Golden Erasmus) for the highest number of mobilities and the programme’s impact on institutional change and the university’s image (2012), an award for exemplary implementation of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education ECHE (2016) and a special award for the university’s overall activities in Mobility Projects and Strategic Partnerships in 2014–2020 (2020). This year, the Foundation for the Development of the Education System honoured the University of Warsaw with a special award for Lifetime Achievement in Education.
