Six students and the lecturer of the University of Warsaw detained in Nigeria have been released. They are safe and currently remain at the campus of the Bayero University Kano. They also stay in touch with their families.

On 27th August, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector, Robert Grey, the UW Chancellor, and representatives of the authorities of the UW’s Faculty of Oriental Studies met with the families of the students detained in Nigeria. During the meeting, the families received verified information on the release of the students and lecturer. They are all safe, in possession of their passports, and remain at the campus of the Bayero University Kano.

“I am happy that three weeks after being detained in Nigeria, our students and lecturer have been released. Their safety has been our priority since the beginning of this incident. I hope the case will soon end with their safe return to the country, to which we are currently putting all our efforts. We would like to thank the authorities of the Bayero University Kano, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the consular services and other institutions involved in helping our students,” the UW Rector said.

The University of Warsaw is currently awaiting the completion of procedural measures from the Nigerian side and is organising the safe return of the students and lecturer to the country. The organisation of their return is coordinated by the UW Chancellor.

“We are doing all we can to ensure that as soon as all formalities are completed, the group of released students and lecturer will leave Nigeria and return to the country,” Robert Grey said.
