The University of Warsaw has launched the “Jadłodzielnia UW” project. Free food-sharing points have been set up in all seven halls of residence belonging to the University of Warsaw. The event was attended by Prof. Ewa Krogulec, the UW Vice-Rector for Development.

On 26th February, the launch of the “Jadłodzielnia UW” took place in the lobby of Student Hall No. 7 “Sulimy”. Food sharing points are publicly accessible places where you can leave surplus food or take advantage of products left by others. The aim of the project is to combat food waste and foster responsible social attitudes among residents of student halls of residence.

The launch was attended by Prof. Ewa Krogulec, the UW Vice-Rector for Development, Mateusz Mossakowski, the President of the Students’ Council of the UW; and Joanna Brzezińska, the Vice-President of the Main Council of Residents’ Councils – a body of the Students’ Council bringing together representatives of the residents’ councils of individual student halls.

During her speech, Prof. Ewa Krogulec pointed out that around 5 million tonnes of food are wasted in Poland every year, which amounts to an average of 126 kg per person. She emphasised that initiatives such as the food-sharing points can make a real contribution to reducing this problem. She also noted that actions promoting sustainable development are among the priorities of the University of Warsaw.

Mateusz Mossakowski pointed out that projects aimed at bringing the student community together are particularly important to the student council. As he emphasised, food sharing points are an example of an initiative that fosters bonding and cooperation among students. Joanna Brzezińska, meanwhile, noted that such activities strengthen the sense of community in student halls of residence and create a space for daily solidarity among their residents.
