Former student at the University of Warsaw is now a leading expert in the field of artificial intelligence. On 1st August, Dr Wojciech Zaremba, co-founder of OpenAI and ChatGPT, visited Poland. “It is encouraging when our graduates achieve success in global science and on the international market. I was also delighted to hear about the widespread interest of the Polish public in meeting Wojciech. I hope that we will soon be able to welcome him back at the University of Warsaw,” says Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw.
Dr Wojciech Zaremba is a graduate of the University of Warsaw, where he studied mathematics and computer science, as well as École Polytechnique near Paris. Already during his studies, he found his way to Silicon Valley, completing an internship at NVIDIA. While writing his doctoral dissertation, he worked at Google Brain and Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research. His co-authored work, Intriguing properties of neural networks, currently has over 19,000 citations (according to Google Scholar). In 2016, Wojciech Zaremba obtained his doctoral degree.
A year earlier, he was one of the co-founders of OpenAI, a company engaged in artificial intelligence research. As part of his work, he led a team that developed a revolutionary language model – ChatGPT.
On 1st August, Dr Wojciech Zaremba visited Kluczbork, his hometown, where he met with participants from all over Poland to discuss applications of AI in everyday and professional life.
“It is encouraging when our graduates achieve success in global science and on the international market. I was also delighted to hear about the widespread interest among the Polish public in the meeting with Wojciech. I hope that we will soon be able to welcome him back at the University of Warsaw,” says Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw.
In 2023, Dr Wojciech Zaremba, together with Sam Altman and Szymon Sidor from OpenAI, took part in a debate on the future of artificial intelligence, organised at the University of Warsaw by IDEAS NCBR. More information is available in the article “Spotkanie z Samem Altmanem na UW” (in Polish).
UW and artificial intelligence
The University of Warsaw has been intensively involved in the development of AI for years. Research in this field is conducted by scientists from, among others, the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, the Digital Economy Lab, the Faculty of Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Sociology. The university co-created the Artificial Intelligence Forum during last year’s Economic Forum in Karpacz and the AI House accompanying the World Economic Forum in Davos.
“Science must not only keep pace with, but actually anticipate the needs of the modern economy and civilisation development. Modern universities must have links with business and new technologies. We want to educate future entrepreneurs, innovators and market creators,” said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw.
