Projects led by Prof. Łukasz Drewniak, Prof. Magdalena Stobińska-Moretto and Prof. Dariusz Plewczyński have secured funding from the Horizon Europe WIDERA Twinning programme. The grants will enable researchers from the UW to strengthen their collaboration with researchers from leading research centres.

The Horizon Europe WIDERA Twinning programme is a European Commission initiative designed to support the development of universities’ research capacity through strategic collaboration with leading European research centres, the exchange of knowledge, and the development of research and organisational capabilities.

 

As part of the latest call for proposals for twinning projects, three projects from the UW have been awarded funding: one led by Prof. Łukasz Drewniak from the Faculty of Biology, one led by Prof. Dariusz Plewczyński from the Centre of New Technologies, and one led by Prof. Magdalena Stobińska-Moretto from the QLAB Center for Hybrid Quantum-Classical Information Technologies. All three projects will run for 36 months.

 

Partnership projects under the HORIZON-WIDERA programme aim to strengthen networking between research institutions from countries covered by the Widening programme. The projects are carried out through collaboration between at least two research institutions from two different member states or associated countries.

 

DynaMF-TWIN

Prof. Łukasz Drewniak from the Institute of Bioengineering at the UW’s Faculty of Biology, is leading the DynaMF-TWIN project: Twinning for Dynamic Microbial Fertilisers in Sustainable European Agriculture.

 

DynaMF-TWIN focuses on the development of innovative microbial products for sustainable agriculture. At the same time, its aim is to strengthen the international research potential of the Faculty of Biology and the University of Warsaw through close collaboration with European leaders in the fields of microbiology, genomics, analytical chemistry and research management.

 

The project is led by the University of Warsaw, and the consortium partners are the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain), KU Leuven (Belgium) and REDINN (Italy). The total project budget amounts to 1.42 million euros.

 

QTWIN

Prof. Magdalena Stobińska-Moretto from the QLAB Center for Hybrid Quantum-Classical Information Technologies is leading the QTWIN project: Quantum Twinning for Building Capacity in Hybrid Quantum-Classical Information Technologies.

 

The aim of the QTWIN project is to strengthen the capacity of the QLAB Center for Hybrid Quantum-Classical Information Technologies, established in January 2026 at the University of Warsaw. QTWIN complements QLAB’s activities by providing professional research management, organised exchanges of researchers, the development of an international cooperation network and advanced training.

 

The project consortium comprises: the University of Warsaw (as coordinator) and three partner institutions – the University of Sorbonne, ETH Zurich and the University of Padua in Italy. The total project budget amounts to €1.94 million.

 

SERENITY

Prof. Dariusz Plewczyński from the UW’s Centre of New Technologies is leading the SERENITY project: Twinning for Excellence in 3D Genome (De)regulation in Inflammation and Autoimmunity.

 

The main objective of the SERENITY project is to permanently strengthen scientific excellence, innovative capacity and Europe’s position in the field of the regulation of three-dimensional genome organisation in immune-mediated inflammation and autoimmune diseases. The project does not aim to build capabilities from scratch, but rather to transform existing, high-quality EU expertise – encompassing T-cell biology, chromatin regulation, mouse genetics, genomics and the SATB1/BACH1 model – into a more integrated, recognisable and competitive European research and innovation environment.

 

The project is coordinated by the Department of Biology at the University of Crete. Four complementary partners are also participating in the SERENITY project: the University of Warsaw, the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia (IEO) in Milan, the CNRS-IGMM in Montpellier and GENODIS (Greece). The budget is €1.49 million.
