There are 15,000 m² of greenery around the University of Warsaw Library (BUW). An additional 2,000 m² covered with diverse vegetation is located 16 m above the ground, on the library roof. It is this place that “The Guardian” has ranked among the 10 most beautiful gardens in European cities. The BUW rooftop garden is open seven days a week until 31st October.
In 1999, the University of Warsaw Library moved from the Main Campus to Powiśle, on Dobra Street. It is the largest university building, with an area of 57,000 m². The library houses the largest academic book collection in Poland. Inside, there are over 3.5 million volumes. It is a place not only for those seeking knowledge on a given topic, but also for those who want to relax in the fresh air.

Since then, it has been open to the public from spring to late autumn. The BUW rooftop garden is divided into four parts: gold, silver, carmine, and green. Each section features plants selected for their colour. From the bridges and observation deck, visitors can admire the panorama of Warsaw: the National Stadium, the Świętokrzyski Bridge, the Vistula River, and the neighbouring rooftop garden of the University of Warsaw building at Dobra 55.
The British newspaper “The Guardian” has published a list of the 10 most beautiful secret gardens in European cities. Among them is the rooftop garden of the University of Warsaw Library.
