On 1st July, the University of Warsaw launched its Office for Security Affairs – a specialised unit responsible for coordinating all activities related to the protection of people and property on university area.
The team involved in establishing the new unit – led by Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw – was committed to creating a security system that strengthens the sense of academic freedom, not limits it. From now on, all key competencies – from prevention to crisis response – are centralised. This was achieved in a spirit of collaboration across the entire academic community – university authorities, staff and students. This is an important step towards a comprehensive approach to security based on clearly defined structures and procedures. We view it as the beginning of a long-term process – building a modern, integrated system encompassing physical security, cybersecurity, crisis management, and information security. True security is not a state of affairs – it is a process. It requires not only procedures but also a culture of responsiveness, communication, mutual respect, and shared responsibility in the daily life of the academic community. This is how we want to understand them and this is how we will develop them,” – says Robert Grey, Chancellor of the University of Warsaw.
On 1st July, the first comprehensive University of Warsaw Guard Regulations came into effect, streamlining the structure and procedures for security services.
Changes to the Security System
The key elements underpinning the reformed University of Warsaw security system include:
- centralisation of responsibilities – full oversight by the Security Office over the protection of people and property, as well as simplified decision-making processes;
- clear intervention and reporting procedures – a regulated structure of the University of Warsaw Guard and a catalogue of permissible measures;
- training and prevention – an ongoing educational program in first aid, crisis response, and data security;
- transparency – the Security Office’s activities comply with personal data protection regulations and the principles of organisational transparency.
Information about the creation of the new unit was presented on 25th June during a meeting of the University of Warsaw Senate, gaining the senators’ approval.
The Office of Security Affairs is led by the Director of Security Affairs. Sławomir Obliński has been appointed to this position by order of the Rector of the University of Warsaw.
