The results of the 8th annual University Physics Competition were revealed. One team from UW were among the winners of a gold medal. Two other teams from UW were ranked as silver medal winners.
The University Physics Competition is an international contest for undergraduate students who work in teams at their home colleges and universities all over the world. They have 48 hours to analyse a real-world scenario using the principles of physics and write a formal paper describing their work.
At the beginning of the contest, each team selects one of two problems which appear on the website. The problems may contain incomplete information, so the students have to do background research and make some reasonable assumptions in order to proceed with the analysis. During the contest, teams may use books, journals, Internet, etc., but they may not consult with any people outside of their team. At the end of the contest, all papers must be sent via e-mail before the 48 hours have elapsed.
265 teams took part in the 8th annual University Physics Competition. 3 teams from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw performed well in it – one won a gold medal and two other teams a silver one.
- UW gold medallists – Wojciech Zwoliński, Marcin Kalinowski and Jerzy Szuniewicz – selected and solved the problem A – “Solar Sailing to Mars”,
- UW silver medallists – Adam Nałęcz-Jawecki, Marcin Solarski and Piotr Górski – selected and solved the problem A – “Solar Sailing to Mars”.
- UW silver medallists – Julia Lange and Michał Lipka – selected and solved the problem B – “Ion Thrusters”.
