“You have shown your love for the University, for fighting Warsaw, and for fighting Poland. It is an honor to meet you again. We are incredibly proud of you,” said University of Warsaw Rector Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, addressing the Heroes of the events 81 years ago. On 1st August, a ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising was held on the University of Warsaw Main Campus.
81 years ago, on the day the Warsaw Uprising broke out, the 8th Group of the First District of the Home Army, Warsaw-Śródmieście, attempted to retake the University of Warsaw campus from the occupying German forces. On 5th August, the group was merged with two other units to form the “Krybar” Combat Group.
On 1st August 1, as every year, the University of Warsaw, together with the “Krybar” Combat Group of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers, commemorated the Heroes of year 1944. The event was attended by Warsaw Uprising heroes, University of Warsaw authorities, the academic community, and Warsaw residents.
You had an extraordinary passion, commitment, and consistency in your actions. You have shown your love for the University, for fighting Warsaw, and fighting Poland. I am deeply thankful. The University needs you. We all need you. Thank you,” said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw.
Prof. Jerzy Gaździcki, codename “Gołąb”, President of the “Krybar” Combat Group Soldiers’ Association at the World Association of Home Army Soldiers, spoke about the events of 81 years ago. The ceremony was led by Dr. Krzysztof Mordyński from the University of Warsaw Museum. The participants were accompanied by songs from the University of Warsaw Choir.

“Krybar” Combat Group
The “Krybar” Combat Group fought in the Warsaw Uprising from 5th August to 3rd September. Its fate is told in the film “Group”, created to mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Uprising.
In 2022, a mural was created on a section of the retaining wall that borders the University of Warsaw grounds from Kazimierzowski Park and Oboźna Street, commemorating the historic moment when, during the Warsaw Uprising, fighters from the “Krybar” Combat Group attempted to retake the university grounds from the occupiers. The mural was designed by Mikołaj Olizar-Zakrzewski, a graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Arts and Painting at the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. The mural was executed by the artist team Takie Pany and Adam Walas.
