UW participates in research on refugee integration

The Institute of Social Prevention and Resocialisation of the UW is a strategic partner of NIEM – the largest European research project concerning the integration of refugees.

‘National Integration Evaluation Mechanism. Measuring and improving integration of beneficiaries of international protection’ (NIEM) is a project conducted by 15 member states of the European Union, consortium of universities, think thanks and NGOs which are interested in the improvement of the living conditions of refugees. The NIEM project aims to improve the integration outcomes of beneficiaries of international protection and to prepare recommendations which can contribute to the shaping of European and national policy solutions.

– A current, tumultuous refugee debate refers to, above all, the reception of refugees in Europe. However, the key issue is related to the recognised refugees who are living in the countries that have provided them international protection. Refugees are a social category which is particularly in danger of exclusion. In order to prevent them from their exclusion, it is important to know which state policies lead to successful integration – stresses Dr. Mikołaj Pawlak from the Institute of Social Prevention and Resocialisation, who represents the UW in NIEM project.

In every two years, researchers will analyse data collected from almost 200 indicators on several elements of refugee integration in society. These include, among others, residency, access to labour market, education and health system.

– It is large and very interesting research material. It will allow us to identify best practices in integration policies and implement them in those countries where the integration of refugees is not effective – says Dr. Mikołaj Pawlak.

The Role of Institute of Social Prevention and Resocialisation of the UW is related to the methodological consultations, participation in collecting and analysing data and preparing recommendations for integration policies. Seminars and conferences regarding refugee integration will be held at the University of Warsaw.

The NIEM project will be carried out until 2021 with support of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.
