This year’s edition of the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has been published. Nine disciplines offered at the University of Warsaw have been included in the ranking, including – for the first time – sociology and economics.
The Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) is an international ranking of universities which includes 57 scientific disciplines, grouped into five fields: natural sciences, medical sciences, social sciences, life sciences, and technical and engineering sciences.
The latest GRAS ranking ranks nine scientific disciplines offered at the University of Warsaw:
- Physics: places 151–200;
- Earth Sciences: places 201–300 (1st place in Poland);
- Sociology: places 201–300;
- Computer Science and Engineering: places 301–400 (1st place in Poland);
- Mathematics: places 301–400;
- Atmospheric Sciences: places 301–400 (the University of Warsaw was the only Polish university to qualify in this discipline);
- Chemistry: places 401–500;
- Economics: places 401–500;
- Psychology: places 401–500.
In total, approximately 2,000 universities from approximately 100 countries and regions were analysed.
Shanghai GRS is one of the most respected global rankings, and the inclusion of the University of Warsaw in its latest edition confirms the importance of the university’s research, its international visibility, and the consistent development of its scientific potential,” says Prof. Ewa Krogulec, Vice-Rector for Development at the University of Warsaw.
The ranking is prepared by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy agency. The ShanghaiRanking was first presented in 2009. Since 2017, following the introduction of a new methodology, it has been published as the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS).
This year’s edition was based on an updated methodology that expands the assessment of scientific achievements to include review articles and utilises updated lists of top journals and conferences, developed based on international expert consultations.
In the overall ranking (ARWU), the University of Warsaw ranks first in Poland in the 401–500 places.
